There were some jitters but a last-gasp moment of bold play saw Wynnum Manly Redland City inflict Ipswich Jets’ first loss of the season at Kitchener Park on Saturday evening.

The Seagulls held the lead for the majority of the match but with 15 minutes on the clock, Ipswich five-eighth Haydan Lipp took on the line to even the score at 26-all.

It looked as the Jets were finishing with a wet sail.

But after holding strong on their own line, the Seagulls marched downfield and spread the ball.

Second rower Brad Mana was the unlikely hero in the 78th minute, crossing out wide to secure a memorable 30-26 victory.

The Jets remain at the top of the table but Wynnum Manly are now equal with 12 competition points.

The inclusion of Intrust Super Cup stalwart John Te Reo boosted the Seagulls’ pack and they started on the front foot, opening a 16-4 lead after 25 minutes.

However, the Jets hits back twice before halftime via winger Ben White and a sneaky effort from hooker Peter Whittaker to reduce the margin to 16-14.

They went tit-for-tat in the second half until Lipp seemingly turned the match in Jets’ favour.

But Mana proved the man for the moment in the final minutes.

In other fixtures, Carina’s good form continued, holding Easts to a 20-all draw, while Valleys got the better of traditional rivals West Brisbane 36-32.

Logan Brothers and Gaters both registered convincing victories against Normanby and Redcliffe respectfully.

The BRL will take a break this weekend with the A Grade representative carnival to be held at Southport from June 6-7.
