After a wet and muggy morning at Davies Park, the afternoon’s sun peaked out just in time to dry the paddock for the Souths Logan v Redcliffe Dolphins match.

It was a hard-hitting opening to the game, with both team’s forward packs looking to test themselves early.

However, the first try came early thanks to bustling Phins winger Aaron Whitchurch who touched down in the third minute off the back of a handover from a Magpies mistake.

As the rain returned, both sides continue to play hard and take risks by chancing their arms in their quest to claim their opening win of the season.

The Dolphins looked the more likely of the sides early, but too much enthusiasm in defence against Souths back row forward Caleb Timu resulted in a penalty and an opportunity for Souths to put some points on the board.

Despite their strong efforts, a slippery hands caused the Magpies to instead turn-over the ball to the Dolphins as the chance went begging.

The Dolphins made them pay and raced out to a 14-0 lead with firstly winger Tom Opacic, then half Luke Capewell going over to score.

However – the Magpies were able to head into the break on a high with Jamayne Isaako diving over to make it 14-6 at the break.

While the visitors started well to post the first points of the second half with Opacic over for his second and an 18-6 lead – the rest of the half belonged to the Magpies who went on to score three unanswered tries to close out the game.

The Dolphins were unable to handle the wet conditions in the second half, with errors giving Souths the ball, then hope and finally the win.

Scott Doyle’s goal kicking boot was also on target and that proved crucial to the end result, with three conversions from four attempts and a penalty kick netting eight points for his side.

This weekend, both teams are on the road, with the Magpies facing the tough trip up to Townsville while the Dolphins have to Wynnum to take on the Seagulls.
