Division celebrates camp history

The QRL Northern Division is this year celebrating the 30th year of its popular Summer Camp.

This year's Mendi Group QRL Northern Division Summer Camp caters for boys from 12 years to 18 years and is open to players of all abilities to learn rugby league skills and how to apply them.

There are over 150 boys registered to attend this year’s camp already with players coming from all over North Queensland from the Atherton Tablelands to Mackay and west to Mount Isa as well as a few boys from the Northern Territory.

Our first camp in 1987 was attended by 81 boys and 22 staff (pictured).

To celebrate our 30th Camp, we would like to invite anyone that attended our first camp in 1987 to this year’s camp opening on Tuesday, December 13 at 12noon in the Western Dining Hall, James Cook University.

Thanks to the wonderful partnership formed between the Mendi Group and the QRL Northern Division, the cost of the camp has remained the same for the campers despite rising costs associated with it.

Over the years, the names of the campers who have gone on to play NRL, Origin and Test football is never ending.

Names include Jacob Lillyman, Grant Rovelli, Josh Hannay, Wendell Sailor, Peter Jones, John Buttigieg, Nate Myles, Aaron Payne, Ray Thompson, Ben Hunt, Sam Thaiday and in more recent times Coen Hess.

Camp details:

Location: James Cook University

Dates: December 13-16

For more information on the camp, contact Kerry in the QRL Northern Division Office on 47716166 or contact email her at k.winton@qrl.com.au
