Despite the wet weather around the state from TC Debbie, this year’s Bundaberg Rugby League season kicked off at the weekend with a 'Super Saturday' at Salter Oval.

The Isis Devils and Past Brothers displayed good form showing their supporters they mean business and are serious about winning this season’s Bundaberg 4BU/HitzFM A Grade premiership.

Both clubs were convincing in their games with Isis defeating Maryborough Brothers 34-10 and Past Brothers beating Western Suburbs 40-22.

Other results indicated that the competition should be very competitive with all clubs right in the race to gain top honours.

Newcomers to the A Grade competition Maryborough Brothers were not disgraced by any means and certainly made Isis work hard for their win.

Western Suburbs have lost a number of players from last season, but still played uncompromising rugby league and came back strongly in the second half against the Brethren.

The Panthers will no doubt benefit greatly from this hit out and will be no pushovers in future games.

Eastern Suburbs stuck to their game plan and defeated the Wallaroos 24-14 in a tough game.

Both clubs displayed some good enterprising rugby league and have put the other clubs on notice.

Last season’s grand finalists Waves Tigers were down a number of players due to work commitments and their astute coach Antonio Kaufusi will no doubt have his players improving each week as the competition continues.

The Wallaroos will also improve after this week’s game following their loss to Easts.

The team is still trying out new combinations, but have shown they will be a definite threat to the leading clubs in the competition.

Defending premiers Hervey Bay maintained their undefeated record from last season and showed they are keen to win back-to-back titles.

Although the Seagulls were down in numbers, they were impressive and never gave up defeating the Waves Tigers 22-14.

LADDER AFTER ROUND 1: Isis 2, Past Brothers 2, Eastern Suburbs 2, Hervey Bay 2, Across the Waves 0, Wallaroos 0, Western Suburbs 0, Maryborough Brothers 0
