International raid on Queensland Grand Final

An international flavour could be added to Intrust Super Cup Grand Final day for the first time in the competition’s rich history, with the Papua New Guinea Hunters in contention to feature in next month’s premiership decider.

The Hunters have already secured the minor premiership and will now play the Redcliffe Dolphins in Week 2 of the finals for direct entry into the September 24 Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium.

The losing team will get one more chance to qualify via the following weekend’s Preliminary Final. Along with PNG and Redcliffe, the Easts Tigers, Sunshine Coast Falcons, Souths Logan Magpies and Townsville Blackhawks have their sights set on the September blockbuster.

Two big Elimination Finals will be played this weekend, with the QRL today confirming the Week 1 Finals Schedule.

From this Wednesday, fans can purchase their Grand Final tickets and corporate hospitality packages via Ticketek (please see below for further information, including ticket release pre-sale dates for Intrust Super Cup Club and Maroon Members).

The match day program features three big games and represents fantastic value for money, with Family Passes (2 adults, 2 juniors) available for just $50.

The future stars of the game will be on show from 12noon, with the NRL Development Cup final kicking off proceedings before the FOGS Colts Challenge decider.

All eyes will be on the Intrust Super Cup clash at 3.25pm when the two best teams go head to head for the right to lift the prestigious silverware and qualify for the National Final against the New South Wales champion on NRL Grand Final day.

QRL Head of Football Neil Wharton said it was shaping up to be a fabulous day of rugby league.

“Suncorp Stadium is the home of rugby league in Queensland and it’s a great reward for our players to have the opportunity to display their skills on such a big stage,” Wharton said.

“I’m really excited about the football we are about to witness in the semi-finals as we countdown to the big one on September 24.

“Sunday afternoon rugby league at Suncorp Stadium is a fantastic way to cap off another big year and no matter which two teams qualify, I’m sure it’s going to be a memorable day for teams and fans alike.”

Wharton encouraged families to make a day out of it.

“A free Family Fun Zone will be operating from the Northern Plaza where children can enjoy a range of activities,” he said.

“Our aim is to provide something for everyone, from families to the traditional league supporter as well as general sports fans looking to enjoy a different experience at a world-class venue.”
