Twenty years ago this season, Matt Geyer scored a hat-trick for the Norths Devils as they won their first and only Intrust Super Cup title to date.

It was a remarkable comeback from the Devils, who had not tasted success since the old Brisbane Rugby League days in 1980 and who trailed 0-16 early against the Wests Panthers.

After his starring grand final role, Geyer used the Intrust Super Cup as a springboard to star in the Melbourne Storm premiership side of 1999 and the New South Wales State of Origin team.

Now a teacher at Marymount College on the Gold Coast, Geyer looks back at the significance of capturing a title for the Devils so early in his career – and how his rugby league experiences have shaped him today.
