Women’s league is set to soar in Mackay

Mackay could be primed to uncover the next generation of superstars, with Mackay Airport signing to sponsor female rugby league for the next three years.

Before this year, Mackay Airport has sponsored the Mackay Female Representative team, however, this year, they have taken one step further and signed on as the naming sponsor of the local female competition.

Evidently, this sponsorship is a reflection of how much the game has grown within the region over the past five years.

To date, Mackay is the only regular women’s competition in North Queensland to have a major sponsor.

All young girls and women should be excited by the several pathways options that are developing in the Mackay and surrounding region.

The Mackay Airport general manager Rob Porter said supporting women's sport was something the airport was keen to do.

"When Mackay Airport sponsors the sporting teams, there's not a lot in it for the airport, it's really about supporting the community," he said.

"I just wanted to get behind the girls, and, watching them play is really fantastic.”

The women’s competition began in Mackay five years ago with two participating teams.

Over the past few years, there has been great growth with six teams set to take part in a full season of football in 2018.

To add to the already exciting news, the North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation have jumped on board as the sponsor for the Female Player of the Year.

The female player of the year will receive $1000, the same as the men’s Player of the Year winner.

The exciting times have only just begun for women's league rugby league.
