Brisbane Broncos winger Corey Oates has rocketed back into Queensland Maroons contention either on the wing or as a bench option insists club legend Steve Renouf in this week's NRL Podcast.

Oates has put his hand up to be a back-rower and while a big ask to do it at State of Origin level, Renouf said that the Maroons' injury concerns to key forwards had also given Queensland selectors cause to consider playing the in-form Broncos flyer as a bench utility.

Renouf outlines why the multi-dimensional game of Brisbane centre James Roberts also has him in the frame for a NSW Blues debut.

He also has sent a message to Titans halfback Ash Taylor, who he rates highly, to "just be Ash Taylor" and not put added pressure on himself by trying to be the next Johnathan Thurston.

Renouf believes the North Queensland Cowboys have turned a corner with their win over the Penrith Panthers and outlines why he is tipping them to take another step forward in their quest to give Thurston the ultimate fairytale finish to his career.

Renouf casts his eye over all of the upcoming Indigenous Round clashes in the Telstra Premiership.
