Broncos target Su'A deal after extending Gillett

Brisbane will ramp up their quest to re-sign 20-year-old back-rower Jaydn Su'A now Test forward Matt Gillett has agreed to terms on an upgraded extension.

Gillett, who is sidelined after fracturing his neck earlier in the season, is set to remain at Brisbane until 2022 and joins fellow Test and Maroons forward Josh McGuire (2021) as long-term blue-chip forward acquisitions.

Kiwi international Alex Glenn is also under contract until the end of 2019.

The Broncos are well served with back-row stocks but regard Su'A, who is already being closely monitored by Maroons selectors, as a future representative star

South Sydney are losing Angus Crichton to the Roosters at the end of the season and Su'A is an 80-minute player who they believe can fill the void.

The Rabbitohs appear to be in the box seat to sign the New Zealand-born forward and have a lucrative offer on the table for Su'A, but the Broncos remained confident of re-signing him and satisfying his desire to play 80 minutes.

This week Su'A told NRL.com he wanted to stay in Brisbane but would make a call on what was best for his football long term.

NRL.com understands that Brisbane are considering starting Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai jnr as props next year and playing McGuire, Gillett and Su'A in the back row with Glenn, Joe Ofahengaue and Payne Haas on the bench.

Another factor working in the Broncos' favour is Su'A is close to Gillett off the field and wants to play alongside him. They also have the same management team.

The Broncos will lose Sam Thaiday to retirement at the end of the season so one spot will open up in the top 17 in 2019.

Lodge and Pangai are off contract at the end of this season but have verbally informed the club of their intention to stay. Pangai, who can play in the middle or on the edge, has publicly stated he will remain at Brisbane on several occasions and coach Wayne Bennett has also said he has no intention of letting him go.
