Raptors and Knights ready for second division decider

The Robina Raptors will go head-to-head with the Coolangatta Knights in the 2018 Kennards Hire Debbie Marzella Cup (second division) grand final this Saturday evening at Coomera Cutters.

Having defeated the Knights earlier in the semi-finals, the Robina Raptors arguably have the advantage coming into the final.

Raptors coach Peter Dean said he hoped the team could bring the same consistent performance and maintain their composure through the final.

"I am a big believer in not changing anything and what we are doing is working, so we need to just worry about ourselves," he said.

The Raptors had a rocky start as Dean only officially came on board as coach six weeks before the commencement of the season.

"Robina is a small club, which is another reason why making the final is such a great achievement," Dean said.

The Raptors have an impressive line up consisting of top try scorer Mitchell Alexanderson, top points scorer Paul Dewstow and hard-working forward Joshua Breen.

Captained by lock Rhys Cushing, the Raptors know Coolangatta are fighters, as evidenced by their nail-biting 14-12 win over the Mudgeeraba Redbacks in the preliminary final.

Appearing in two of the past three grand finals, the Knights are no strangers to the finals spotlight.

They have had tremendous year so far, going through the regular season undefeated and finishing as minor premiers.

"We took quite a blow with injury and dropped in player availability in the back end of the season, but always still managed to put a team on the paddock," Knights coach Arwin Marcus said.

His side are only in their fourth year of operation and after taking out the competition in 2016, the club and team are hungry for another major win.

"It is a great achievement as a whole, not just for the playing group but everyone off the field can be rewarded for their hard-work throughout the season," Marcus said.

Although some players are in doubt to play this weekend, the Knights will look for support from Jeff Funnell, Brad Mathews, Nathan Ingram and Zac Umstad.

Co-captained by Adam McGrath and Paul Abric, the Knights will stick to the same structure and attitude as the past couple of matches.
