Poppy wins a premiership at 51

It started on a whim and ended in a premiership for 51-year-old Pittsworth Danes player Russell Klein.

Klein decided in the off-season to re-emerge from retirement so he could play alongside sons Jayden and Jai in the Toowoomba Rugby League Second Division competition.

"Both my boys weren't doing anything at the start of the season and were just sitting around at home, so I said 'Why don't we do it?'," Klein told QRL Media in May

"We probably won't ever get another chance.

"How many blokes get the chance to play footy with their two sons? It's the best thing you can do.

"That's what memories are about. Go out with your family and have a laugh and a good time, put some shots on in defence and cop a few back."

While the season didn't go entirely to plan – son Jayden suffered a serious injury and couldn't finish the year – it did end with a fairy tale of sorts.

Pittsworth captured the title with a 28-14 win against Warwick in the decider, marking just the second premiership of Klein's storied career.

He not only got to celebrate the achievement alongside his son, but also with grandson Hudson who was there to cheer him on.
