Demetriou set to join Rabbitohs and reunite with Bennett

Jason Demetriou has reunited with Wayne Bennett at South Sydney as assistant coach just days after officially parting with the Brisbane Broncos.

Demetriou has agreed to terms with the Rabbitohs, with his appointment officially announced on Thursday.

Demetriou, who was interviewed for the head coaching position at the Broncos prior to Anthony Seibold being given the job, wants to be a head NRL coach and it is understood the Rabbitohs have discussed succession plans with him to that end.

The former Brisbane assistant coach has long-standing links with several members of the Rabbitohs staff.

He is a childhood friend of fellow South Sydney assistant coach Willie Peters from their Kingsgrove High School days.

Rabbitohs football operations and player wellbeing manager Brock Schaefer was CEO of the Northern Pride in 2014 when Demetriou was the coach of the Intrust Super Cup side that won the grand final.

Events leading to Demetriou's move to Souths only unfolded in recent days.

He was not guaranteed a role at Redfern when Bennett was sacked by the Broncos but his record as one of the leading young coaches in the game and acknowledged rapport with his players has been identified by the Rabbitohs hierarchy.
