Griffith teams dominate in competition return

It was a big night for the Griffith University teams as the Universities Rugby League Queensland competition resumed for round two last night.

All three Griffith teams had wins as the URLQ sides set their sights on next month’s finals.

And it was the Griffith Gold Coast Panthers who got themselves back into the hunt for a play-off berth by dispatching ACU 36-12.

At Southport’s Owen Park, Panthers’ half Cody Feltham and Harley Nielsen both scored doubles as the home side finished off nicely.

They had led 20-12 at halftime and did not let ACU score as they won their first match of the season.

At Logan, the Griffith Redbacks came from behind to move into equal-third position on the ladder.

The QUT Trouts strode out to a 10-0 halftime lead, but it was all the Redbacks after the break.

Tyrone Girle’s team finished with a 28-16 win that keeps them well in the hunt for a finals berth.

Meanwhile at St Lucia, the Griffith Dragons kept their undefeated run alive with a 30-10 victory over the University of Queensland Hounds.

The Hounds were undermanned in the backline and the Dragons took full advantage, with speedy fullback Sean Dermba going over for two tries.

The minor premiership is now at the mercy of the classy Dragons, but the Hounds will be fighting to defend their premiership with reinforcements set to arrive.

In Round 7 matches next week, ACU will host the Dragons, the Redbacks and Panthers will hold a southern battle at Logan, and the Hounds and Trouts will clash at the University of Queensland.
