Finals fever reaches Ipswich this weekend

Finals football is underway in the Rugby League Ipswich competitions with 16 junior and senior fixtures taking place this weekend.

Divisions ranging from A Grade all the way to the Under 13 division will host finals fixtures this weekend with North Ipswich Reserve and Len Johnson Oval splitting the hosting responsibilities.

The A Grade regular season reached its conclusion a fortnight ago, with all teams receiving a bye last week and returning to action at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday and Sunday.

The major semi-final features minor premiers Brothers Ipswich taking on Goodna & Districts Eagles with the winner advancing directly to the grand final.

With 14 wins from 18 games, Brothers did enough to hold off a late charge from Goodna to finish on top of the ladder with 55 competition points.

The Eagles have stormed into finals with a six-game win streak including a 34-16 win over Brothers in Round 19.

Working against the Eagles is some unfortunate timing with a Round 21 bye, meaning they have had a three-week break since their last game.

If they can defeat Brothers this Saturday, they will get another bye next week, meaning they would go into the grand final having played just one game in five weeks, while their opponent would have a more consistent preparation.

The other A Grade game is an elimination final between Swifts Bluebirds and Redbank Plains Bears on Sunday afternoon.

For-and-against was all that could split these sides in the regular season as they both finished on 50 points with 11 wins each.

The winner will advance to the preliminary final against either Brothers or Goodna, with the loser bowing out of the 2019 competition.

Fixtures for the Rugby League Ipswich finals series will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at North Ipswich Reserve and Len Johnson Oval.
