QRL confirms schedule for opening weekend of finals

Four bumper Sunday matches will kick-start the 2019 Intrust Super Cup finals series next weekend.

First-placed Sunshine Coast Falcons are drawn to play Townsville Blackhawks (4) at home, while Wynnum Manly Seagulls (2) and Burleigh Bears (3) clash at BMD Kougari Oval.

The two winners progress to the preliminary finals in week three of the play-offs.

Next Sunday will also feature two blockbuster elimination finals, with the WWOS team calling the Norths Devils (5) v Easts Tigers (8) clash on GEM; and FOX Sports bringing fans all the action from the Tweed Seagulls (6) v Redcliffe Dolphins (8) encounter.

The stage is set for an fascinating finals series after a thrilling finish to the regular season, which saw:

  • the Falcons presented with the John Cracker McDonald Minor Premiership Shield after a nail-biting 28-28 draw with the Ipswich Jets, who came tantalisingly close to sending co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker out as winners in their final match in charge.
  • the Wynnum Manly Seagulls clinch second spot and a home semi-final with a big win over the Norths Devils.
  • Townsville, Tweed, Burleigh and Redcliffe all registering final-round wins ahead of the opening week of the play-offs.

In the Hastings Deering Colts, Townsville Blackhawks claimed the minor premiership following their win over Easts Tigers.

Townsville finished the regular season locked on 39 competition points alongside Burleigh and Wynnum, however the Blackhawks superior ‘for and against’ record saw them top the standings.
