Under 14 teams to contest Tassell Trophy Challenge

Teams will converge on Vico Oval this weekend for the 18th annual Tassell Trophy Challenge Under 14 Carnival hosted by Kangaroos Junior Rugby League.

For the past 18 years, the carnival has been played in honour of the well respected family and this year will run from from September 28-29.

This year's carnival will have extra special meaning as well with the local rugby league community to gather for a special memorial service in memory of Tom Tassell who passed away earlier in the year.

Tassell's dedicated 50 years of service to both junior and senior rugby league in North Queensland as either coach, administrator, selector, or adviser at all levels, and more recently as a Director with the Jones Park Board of Management.

He was a life member of Queensland Rugby League Northern Division, Cairns Kangaroos and Cairns District Rugby League.

Tassell was an outstanding rugby league player who moved to Mount Isa from Brisbane as a paid player in 1965.

He played for Black Stars before transferring to Townies and in 1968 played for North West Queensland against Great Britain.

In 1969, Tassell scored the first try for Mount Isa in their 1969 Foley Shield victory which was the first in the team's history.

He played for North Queensland in 1970 and 1971, lining up against the touring Great Britain team in 1971.

In 2008, Tassell was named in Mount Isa’s Legends of League team.

The special ceremony will be held at 10.40am on Saturday, September 28 at Kangaroos Rugby League, Irene Street, Cairns

Anyone who was unable to attend his funeral is welcome to join the Tassell family in a special memorial service.

The service is an opportunity for people to pay their respects to a man who had a huge influence over so many people, and then to stay on and watch some quality rugby league which is just the way Tassell would have liked it.

Round and semi final games are 30 minute in duration (2 x 15 minute halves) with a five-minute break to change ends and in between games with no time off for injury.

The grand final will played over 40 minutes (2 x 20 minutes) with a five-minute break for half time.

The boys teams will be vying for the Tom Tassell Trophy while the girls will battle it out for the Sandy Tassell Trophy and will be presented with Perpetual Shields.
