Burleigh and Tweed nominated for Gold Coast sport award

Burleigh Bears' Intrust Super Cup and Tweed Seagulls' Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup teams have been nominated for Team of the Year - People's Choice as part of the Gold Coast’s 52nd Sports Star Awards.

The awards, presented by Sports Gold Coast Ltd and Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame, celebrate the success of elite athletes, grassroots clubs and sports volunteers who shone during 2019.

Bears CEO Damian Driscoll said to take out the category would be icing on the cake for the Cup team, after a spectacular 2019.

The Bears took out the competition with a 28-10 win over Wynnum Manly Seagulls, but fell to Newtown Jets 20-16 in the NRL State Championship.

“To win the Gold Coast Team of the Year – People's Choice award, would be an outstanding reward to everyone at the Burleigh Bears," Driscoll said.

Bears skipper Luke Page said it was a privilege and honour to be nominated.

Tweed's Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup side, including now Brisbane Broncos star Xavier Coates, took out the competition and went on to claim the national title with a 48-14 win over the Illawarra Steelers
