Gold Stars to test their skills against ladder-leading Bears

North Queensland Gold Stars will return to the south-east corner of the state again this weekend to face off against this season’s frontrunners the Burleigh Bears in what is set to be a highlight of Round 6 of the BHP Premiership.

It will be a highly-anticipated clash between this season's top-of-the-ladder teams, with the Stars in fine form for the clash.

However, there’s no denying the top-ranked team Burleigh will be a force on the field.

The Bears boast a perfect track record this season and are ready to perform against the challenging Stars.

“They know what their job is on Saturday, they’ve just got to do it,” Bears coach Tahnee Norris said ahead of this weekend’s game.

“North Queensland have put on a really strong side, so we just have to be up for it.

"We're short a few with injuries, but that’s just what footy’s about and you have to be able to adjust.”

The Townsville-based Stars are ready for the fight after their visit to Brisbane last weekend, when they played the Valkyries and returned home with an 18-point win against the young team.

This match continued their winning streak since Round 2 of the competition and cemented their position near the top of the ladder where they sit comfortably in third place.

“We’re just trying to stick to our blueprint, it seems to be working,” Stars coach Gavin Lloyd said.

“If we can get into the grind with them, I think we will be very competitive.

"If we let them bully us and have their own way it won’t be a good outcome, so we’ve just got to match them in the dog fight and keep the intensity high the whole game.”

The Bears have had a cracking season and are yet to be beaten and will be hoping to continue that form this weekend with their home ground advantage and a number of NRLW-experienced players selected in the line up.

Lloyd however was confident that the experience would not deter the North Queensland side.

“I’ve told my team, it’s just 17 women on 17 women, that’s how we’ll look at it and we’ll go from there,”  Lloyd said.

Elsewhere, the Valkyries are set to go up against West Brisbane Panthers in a "home" game with hopes of capitalising on their strong effort in last week’s match against the Stars where they led early on in the match and put up a fight the whole way through.

This match will be broadcast via QRL.com.au, Intrust Super Cup app, QRL Facebook.

Central Queensland Capras and Tweed Seagulls have not been able to turn good patches of play into wins, and both teams will be keen to secure just their second win of the season when they go head-to-head at Emerald's McIndoe Park.

Brisbane Tigers will have a fight on their hands and will look to take down the number two ranked team Valleys Diehards at Emerson Park. The Tigers are coming off a well-earned win, but will have to contend with the experience of the Diehards who have been showing their skill in their undefeated season so far.
