Statewide score wrap: The Bears are out of hibernation

The mighty Clermont Bears have fully awoken from their temporary hibernation, roaring to a dominant win at home in the Purcell's Engineering Central Highlands Premiership.

The proud and historic club withdrew from the competition in 2019 due to low player numbers, but worked hard to emerge from their hiatus in 2020 before being dealt another roadblock thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

But now five rounds into the new season, they have clawed their way back into contention, putting back-to-back wins together to bring much joy to the passionate Clermont faithful.

West Brisbane Panthers were out of control against Bulimba last Saturday at Frank Lind Oval, running in 13 tries to improve their for-and-against in the 70-0 performance.

Auzzie Tuwhangai, Tye Gray and Ben Mathiou scored a treble each and to add to the attacking efforts, the Panthers were also able to maintain their line.

For the first time in a few rounds, Wynnum Manly Seagulls were the front runners and stayed there against Valleys, who travelled to Kitchener Park, but came away without the three points nor troubled the scorers with a 20-0 loss - the Diehards' third straight defeat.

The Brighton Roosters have got the monkey off their back, winning for the first time in more than 12 outings. It was all the home side at Jim Lawrie Field with Mitch Ayling crossing twice to put a 44-18 dominant win over Carina. The Tigers have now lost their last two games with last year’s semi-finalists now sitting outside the top five in seventh place.

Pine Rivers got out of the blocks early last Saturday at Bill Norris Oval leading 34-10 at half-time. The home side had the better of the second half taking an 18-12 win for the second stanza.

Pine Rivers had some quality number nines with Manaia Cherrington, Shane Pumipi and Sheldon Pitama steering the Bears around the park; meanwhile, Beenleigh big boys Devontai Seumanutafa and Cuba-Bay Tahiti both crashed over with Tahiti scoring a glorious winger's try.

This weekend at Bert St Clair Oval - barring a draw - either Normanby or Wynnum Manly will remain undefeated after Round 7.

Hutchinson Builders Cup - Toowoomba

Contributed by QRL Toowoomba correspondent Andrew O'Brien

Two second half tries by Meringandan Pub player of the match Mitch Watson secured an important win away against Wattles at Platz Oval on Saturday night.

Trailing 10-4 and 16-10, Watson stood up his opposition to score the valuable four-pointers which, in the end, went a long way to win the local derby for the Warwick Cowboys.

Valleys secured their place in the Hutchison Builders TRL premiership ladder with a comprehensive win over neighbours Newtown.

The Roosters did not have it all their way as a spirited Lions outfit put it to the 2019 premiers during the match but the Roosters were too slick with Tevita Cocker grabbing the player of the match honours.

Goondiwindi Boars proved they are the real deal with a clinical win over the Diehards at Dalby.

They capitalised on their opposition's poor completion rate and were very disciplined in their execution and frustrated the Diehards all day.

Gatton continued on their winning way with a comprehensive win over Souths Tigers at Cahill Park on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks were relentless with fullback Luke Self leading the charge by scoring a triple in a good win.

Toowoomba Brothers won their second game in succession with in-form Leprechaun Sam Betros outstanding, scoring five tries.

The Brethren did a lot of the damage in the first half leading 32-12 at the break. Pittsworth did rally early in the second half to get to 36-28 when young guns Chris Woodbridge and Tom O’Sullivan lifting their side.

In the final match of the weekend, the Highfields Eagles returned to the winners list with a 46-point win over neighbours Oakey at Kuhls Road. Jarrod Lee scored three tries in a player of the match performance, whilst Pat Templeman continued his good form by grabbing a double in an all-round performance.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Contributed by QRL Bundaberg correspondent Vince Habermann

Triple BRL leading try scorer Trent Seeds finally rediscovered his mojo, bagging a hat-trick of tries to spearhead Easts Magpies to well executed 28-10 victory over Waves Tigers in their Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership Round 7 clash at Salter Oval on Sunday.

By their win, the Magpies moved into outright second on the ladder on nine points, now just one point behind Wests Panthers, who were unable to overcome the absence of a string of their stars against Wallaroos at Eskdale Park on Saturday, with the hosts taking full advantage and roaring to a 32-8 triumph.

Hervey Bay went into the weekend in equal-second place with Easts, but they slumped to their third straight loss, being edged out by reigning champions Past Brothers 22-18 in the early game at Salter on Sunday.

The Seagulls, who were unbeaten through the first four rounds and outright leaders before their slide, are now in third position on seven points, just one in advance of Wallaroos and Brothers, with Waves returning to sixth and last on four points.

A powerhouse centre, the 23-year-old Seeds has been a prolific scorer throughout his career, firstly for Wests Panthers, then Waves Tigers and now the Magpies, with regular hauls of three or more, but he had unusually managed just one four-pointer from the first six rounds.

But despite his theatrics, it was the playing comeback of coach Brent Kuskey, a dual BRL player of the year and multiple premiership ace for the Brethren and Panthers, who retired after Brothers’ 2019 grand final victory, which really gave Easts extra dimension and direction.

Kuskey took no time to slot straight into the side beautifully, driving the attack at hooker, making his signature incisive runs from dummy-half, generating lots of second-phase ball, tackling everything in his path, and rallying his troops magnificently.

He also produced the play of the game, with a booming 40/20 kick which resulted in a try to interchange dynamo Isaiah Gala on the stroke of half-time, with captain Matt Craven’s sideline conversion putting them ahead 14-4 and dealing the brave Tigers a blow from which they never recovered.

Reigning BRL A Grade player of the year Craven was also among the tries, taking his season tally to 10, while new signing, wrecking ball front rower Vahiiti Hopoi, a former multiple premiership winning trump for Brothers and Waves, also scored on club debut.

Meanwhile; Wallaroos, who had been humbled at home by Easts 34-12 a week earlier and been thrashed by the Panthers 60-30 in Bundaberg in their only previous clash this year, staged a dramatic turn and produced by far their best performance of the season so far, admittedly against a much depleted Wests, with their evergreen five-eighth and two-time BRL player of the year Shaun Collins and centre Brad Wex both notching doubles.

Like Hervey Bay, Brothers were staring down the barrel of three losses in a row, but they did enough to hang on, although in the end, both sides claimed four tries, but the boot of Zak Bainbridge was the match winner as he kicked three goals to the Seagulls’ one.

Brothers veteran multiple premiership champion lock Aaron Hall, who came out of retirement to help out, scored his first try in his third game back, while former club president and blockbusting veteran front rower Logan Tanzer made an impact off the bench, also crashing over for one four-pointer.

Round 7 results

Maryborough Wallaroos 32 (Brad Wex 2, Shaun Collins 2, Bailey Robertson, Joel Cox tries; Jorden Kemble 4 goals) defeated Wests Panthers 8 (Isaiah Bullard, Jensen Deamer tries)

Past Brothers Bundaberg 22 (Danny Moran, Benaiah Kambanei, Aaron Hall, Logan Tanzer tries; Zak Bainbridge 3 goals) defeated Hervey Bay Seagulls 18 (Daniel Goodwin, Dylan Crockford, William Walthall, Dion Bunyan tries; Jayden Johnson goal)
