Statewide score wrap: The might of Mundubbera

After two rounds of the Central Burnett Rugby League competition, the mighty Mundubbera Tigers are on fire; backing up their triumphant pre-season success.

Making the grand final in the Mundubbera Nines and claiming victory in the Men of League Round Robin series, the Tigers flexed their muscle once again with a 52-6 victory at home against Monto, backing up their Round 1 fortune against Gayndah.

They'll now enjoy the week off before tackling the Roos again.

Elsewhere in the state, it could be said a weird phenomenon has happened in Cairns with the fifth draw of the season being recorded after Round 8 of a 20-week regular season.

Split points are few and far between in an entire year statewide, let alone already having five fixtures in an area ending without a winner with still more than half the season to play.

The Brighton Roosters clearly didn't care about where their opposition were on the competition ladder as they pushed the undefeated Normanby Hounds all the way at Jim Lawrie Field on Saturday night - a Lachlan Cooper field goal in the 77th minute the difference, breaking the 22-22 deadlock.

Both sides posted four tries in an epic encounter until the final hooter with the Hounds winning 23-22. They remain undefeated but they will be shaken, but perhaps not stirred by the plucky Roosters.

Brighton are renowned to push sides to the brink. They may have not won many games in recent times but have sent sides to the sheds at full-time knowing they have been put to the test.

Wynnum Manly returned to the winner's circle after their towelling against the Hounds last week with a 54-4 win over Beenleigh.

While the scoreline suggested it was all one way traffic for the 'Gulls, the Pride muscled up in the middle 40 minutes, but fell away in the back end after conceding too many points in the first 20 minutes.

Clearly the Pride have talent and spirit, and when they bring their 80 minute game, a win is certainly within their reach. With a bye and a certain three points this weekend, coach Jason Gainey will have the Pride on the hunt in Round 10.

The Bears from Pine Rivers were looking for a fourth-straight win up agaubst tge Panthers in their Round 8 clash at Mathieson Oval, however it was West Brisbane who have now won five on trot with a convincing 42-24 victory.

Two tries and five goals to Luke Pollock for an individual 18 points was the highlight in an eight tries to four scoreline with Bears utility Tim Tupou crossing twice for the home side.

Bulimba have shaken off their Round 6 loss to post back-to-back wins after accounting for Carina 30-20.

Try-scoring machine Oliver Pascoe crossed three times for the Bulldogs to take his four-pointer tally to eight this season.

Carina coach Jason Di Lizio is looking for the Tigers mojo that started their season off - albeit with close losses - the Tigers were a tough assignment in rounds where they lost their first two games on the bell by two points, then a Round 4 win over the Diehards 34-18.

Hutchinson Builders Cup - Toowoomba

In a much anticipated match, the Goondiwindi Boars cemented their place at the top of the TRL ladder with a 20-point win over the defending premiers Valleys Roosters.

A huge hometown crowd witnessed a well-drilled side take care of the Roosters in most aspects of the contest and were excellent in their execution, hanging onto the ball unlike their opposition.

Highfields travelled to Dalby on Saturday in a difficult task to defeat Dalby on their home turf. They played well in a sustained pressure game against a determined Diehards outfit.

The Eagles led for most of the match but Dalby got to 28-22 late in the game to give them a sniff, but Pat Templeman and Cory McGrady stood tall to put the game away.

It took a while, but Warwick overcame Gatton with three late tries in a convincing display at Cahill Park on Sunday.

In a quality game, both sides turned up to play and despite the Hawks scoring the first two tries in the first 11 minutes, the Cowboys went on a point-scoring onslaught to ice the victory.

In an enthralling affair, Wattles came from behind to defeated Pittsworth 34-32 on Sunday afternoon.

Centre Harry Cooke scored the first three tries to get the Danes in front early, but Wattles bounced back with tries to player of the match Micheal Pearson and Braydon Wilson and went on with it to lead at half-time. A edge-of-your-seat final 40 minutes saw the Danes clinch their second win of the season in an epic contest.

Brothers scored their fourth win in a row when they defeated Newtown 20-14 in a close game at Jack Martin Centre. Leprechauns hooker Bryce Whale had his best game of the season troubling the opposition all day.

And in the final match of the round, Souths Tigers overcame a determined Oakey side to come-from-behind and defeat the Bears 30-20 at Trevor Mickleborough Oval.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Dynamic young gun second rower Travin Baumann notched a double to lead the charge as Hervey Bay Seagulls snapped a four-match losing streak in the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership, upstaging league leaders Wests Panthers for the second time this season, winning an end-to-end duel 32-24 in their Round 9 showdown at Salter Oval on Sunday.

In a scoreline remarkably similar to the 34-24 when they last met on April 24 - which had been the Seagulls’ previous victory - they matched their opponents in all departments, establishing a 16-12 half-time lead, and continuing to dig deep in the face of everything that was thrown at them.

The Panthers’ loss opened the door for Easts Magpies to move to the top of the table, and they seized the opportunity with both hands in the match that followed, plucking an admittedly depleted reigning champions Past Brothers 46-16 with evergreen fullback Clinton Horne at his vintage best in his second game back from an injury suffered in the season opener, bagging a hat-trick of tries in a five-star all-round performance.

On Saturday, Waves Tigers, who went into the weekend in sixth and last position, resurrected their season with a 38-26 dispatch of their hosts Wallaroos at Eskdale Park Maryborough.

The Magpies had been beaten 32-16 by the Brethren in their previous clash, but the boot was well and truly on the other foot this time despite Easts being without their coach Brent Kuskey, who had made a playing comeback a fortnight earlier and was instrumental in turning them from a very good side to probably the new title favourites.

They just keep going from strength to strength, and apart from Horne, it was business as usual for their other former BRL A Grade player of the year, captain and second rower Matthew Craven, while halfback Tyrell Howard, who was a star in Brothers’ 2017 premiership and Waves’ 2018 title, also bagged a double in a galaxy of stars.

Waves also produced by far their best performance of the season and coach Antonio Kaufusi said he knew their season was on the line and was delighted with how his players delivered against a very good Roos side.

Captain and second rower Reece Maughan led from the front with a double, but Kaufusi said blockbusting front rower Folau Havili was their best, ahead of fullback Layton Chambers who continued his outstanding form, and their other front rower Ross Larsen.

Easts Magpies 46 (Clinton Horne 3, Tyrell Howard 2, Trent Seeds, Andreas Nona, Matthew Craven, Caleb Van Lawick tries; Tyrell Howard 2, Matthew Craven 2, Andreas Nona goals) defeated Past Brothers Bundaberg 16 (Taylar Barritt, Tom Murray, Aaron Hall tries; Zak Bainbridge 2 goals)
