Clubs celebrate a special player in Mitch Cronin Memorial Cup match

An outstanding player, a good person and a role model – Mitch Cronin was someone special to have at your club.

This Sunday, the two clubs that played a huge role in developing Cronin into one of the most successful players in the Intrust Super Cup will play for the Mitch Cronin Memorial Cup, to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most popular players in the competition.

Making his Cup debut with Souths Logan Magpies in 2011 and also featuring in 2014; Cronin later moved to Wynnum Manly Seagulls in 2016 where he played 85 games and rose to be captain of the team, leading them out in their grand final appearance in 2019.

On Sunday at BMD Kougari Oval, special tribute will be paid Cronin in the lead-up to the Cup game, with both teams walking out together alongside former team-mates of Cronin.

Both teams will also retire the no.9 jersey for the match, with Wynnum Manly Seagulls hooker Jayden Berrell set to run out in jersey 18 and Souths Logan Magpies rake Cory Paix wearing 17.

The no.9 jersey from each team will be placed on the first chair of the bench for each cub.

Mitch Cronin: Forever a gun

In announcing the special game – which will become an annual fixture between the two clubs – Wynnum Manly Seagulls CEO Hanan Laban said he expected a large crowd to gather to pay their respects.

“Mitch Cronin was more than a great player, he was a beloved member of our club who made a huge contribution to the Seagulls and its community,” Laban said.

“(This) Sunday, June 13, will be a special day to honour Mitch, and we expect there will be a lot of people wanting to come and pay tribute to him alongside his family, friends, team mates and former team mates.”
