Statewide score wrap: Highfields soar in Madsen Rasmussen

It was a weekend of storylines for the Highfields Eagles as they rose to the occasion and claimed victory over the Goondiwindi Boars in the annual Madsen Rasmussen clash on Sunday.

The mid-season final between the top two teams of the Toowoomba Rugby League competition brought many to Herb Steinohrt Oval for the calendar favourite and whilst it was thought competition leaders Goondiwindi would prevail, it was the high-flying Eagles who soared on the silverware that was on offer with a 34-18 victory.

The win is the club's first A Grade trophy and coach Gus McKellar's first taste of success at the helm of the top grade side after an illustrious, multiple title-winning playing career.

It was also the Eagles' first time winning two titles in a day; claiming the spoils in the Under 18 President's Cup with a 37-36 win over Dalby.

Hutchinson Builders Cup - Toowoomba

The Highfields Eagles took on Goondiwindi Boars in the first TRL final since 2019.

The start to game was fierce and physical and in the third minute of play, Goondiwindi’s Brandon McGrady was sent off for a tackle on a Highfields player.

It was not the start the Boars were looking for but it did not seem to worry as halves Micky Hazzard and David McGrady put on some good go forward, putting David Armstrong through a gap close to the Eagles line. He still had plenty to do but managed to score to get the first points on the board.

The game flowed vigorously over the next period of time and Highfields spent plenty of time in Goondiwindi’s 20-metre zone and scored the next two tries through Sean Hamel and Cory McGrady to gain the lead 10-6 after 23 minutes.

Possession was gold and it proved the right analogy as each side scored when they put together consecutive sets of six. The Boars accomplished this when one of their best, Hazzard scrambled over the regain the lead 12-10 after 27 minutes.

This trend continued and it was Highfields’ turn to cross the goal line when fullback Jarrod Lee dodged and weaved his way through to place the ball under the posts in the 31st minute and they grabbed the lead back 16-12.

It was a hard fought, see-sawing first half with the teams going to the break four points apart.

Highfields came out of the sheds the better with bench player Jacob Leach scoring to get the Eagles on a roll and they continued to gain most of the possession from then on. Nick Bainbridge scored when he finished off a good raid to get Highfields to 28-12 with 16 minutes remaining.

The Boars scored with 12 minutes remaining through Geoffrey Prince when he crossed in the corner. Malcolm McGrady kicked the sideline conversion to show their dogged determination, but Highfields had other ideas when Bill and Stephen Pollard medallist and player of the final Matt Prowse scored in the 73rd minute to all but put the game in the bag.

Prowse was fantastic, especially his defence. It was a good display by him who came back to play rugby league after a couple of years off. When he scored, he ran to the nearby Eagles supporters and received many pats on the back.

Goondiwindi were very good playing with 12 players for the majority of the match. McGrady and Hazard where their best as was Jed Kindt and Kyle Munro in the pack.

They can hold their heads high knowing their opposition had to play well to beat them, irrespective of playing with 12 men.

The Eagles will now have confidence going into the second rotation of the TRL competition which is turning out to be one of the closest in recent memory.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Easts Magpies and Wests Panthers continued to look on a collision course for the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership grand final with contrasting Round 12 victories at a Salter Oval quagmire on Saturday.

Playing for survival, last-placed Wallaroos served it up to second-placed Wests but after scores were locked together midway through the second half, the Panthers won the battle and grabbed four more tries to run out 32-16 victors.

Fifth-placed Waves also threw down the gauntlet to top-of-the-table Easts in by far their best performance of the season so far, but the Magpies weathered the storm and prevailed 12-6 in a real arm wrestle to extend their winning streak to seven.

Hervey Bay Seagulls were also scheduled to host reigning premiers Past Brothers but after advising on Friday that their grounds were unplayable following heavy rain, but declining the Bundaberg Rugby League’s request for the game to be transferred to Salter Oval, the BRL ruled it as a forfeit, meaning that the Brethren moved past them on the ladder into third place.

Easts’ captain and reigning BRL A Grade player of the year Matt Craven, who has played in multiple positions but this week started in the second row, notched his 15th four-pointer of the season to increase his lead in the leading try scorer stakes to five over Waves’ Layton Chambers and team-mate and former BRL multiple leading try scorer winner Trent Seeds, who continued his high strike rate since returning to the centres after starting the season in the forwards, picking up their other try on the day.

But Craven has recently given up the goal kicking duties, and while he reclaimed the outright lead in the leading points scorer, taking his tally to 114, two more than Chambers, who was restricted to one conversion for the game.

The Magpies retain a three-point lead over the Panthers with three rounds to go, and while the two heavyweights will square off in the last round on July 24, if Easts can win their next two matches, they will wrap up the minor premiership and gain direct passage to the major semi-final.

The Tigers remain in fifth position, just two points in front of Wallaroos with a significantly better points differential to them of -41 to -120.

But Waves can certainly take plenty of positives out of the game, and they continue to get better and better every week; however for Roos, after five straight losses, they need a dramatic turn-around if they are to challenge them for the last finals berth.

Still, it could come down to a penultimate round duel between the two sides on Saturday week to seal the deal.

On Saturday, unheralded winger Robert Telfer laid the platform for Wests, scoring their first two tries, but in the end, it was the class and experience of their Central Queensland Capras Intrust Super Cup representative Caleb Tull who broke the deadlock, before 47th Battalion Merit Team member and long serving club champion Josh Tanner also crossed, then interchange dynamos Joseph Doyle and Patrick Tanna put the icing on the cake.

Round 12 results

Wests Panthers 32 (Robert Telfer 2, Jensen Deamer, Caleb Tull, Josh Tanner, Joseph Doyle, Patrick Tanna tries; Chris Robinson, Caleb Tull goals) defeated Wallaroos Maryborough 16 (Jackson Gouge, Ethan Ballard, Ben Waters tries; Rigan Nielsen 2 goals)
