Statewide score wrap: Valleys collar Normanby's impressive run

The Valleys Diehards have ended Normanby's amazing unbeaten 11-game winning streak, comprehensively defeating the Hounds 32-4 at Graceville on Saturday.

It was an all-round display by the Diehards who despite trailing the ladder-leaders after only two minutes of play, were able to score six unanswered tries to put the icing on the cake of their seventh win of the Brisbane Premier A Grade season.

The royal blue are hitting their straps at the right time of the year, moving into the top four after a sluggish start in the opening weeks, and will want to navigate further up the heavily-congested ladder in the remaining five rounds ready to make amends of bowing out one game short of the big dance last season.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Contributed by QRL Bundaberg correspondent Vince Habermann

Hooker Tim Cole bagged a double as reigning champions Past Brothers roared into title contention by bursting the Easts Magpies bubble, ending their eight-match winning streak with a stunning 38-22 boil-over in their Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership penultimate round showdown at Salter Oval on Saturday.

The Magpies already had the minor premiership secure, but for the Brethren, they remained third on the ladder but sealed a top-three finish and a qualifying final berth against Wests Panthers, who bounced back from their shock loss to Waves Tigers a week earlier to clinch second place by outgunning their hosts Hervey Bay Seagulls 26-18 at Stafford Park.

In the early game at Salter Oval, Waves were unable to back up their performance in upsetting Wests, starting poorly against cellar dwellers Wallaroos to fall behind 12-0 after 10 minutes and paying the price, ultimately going down 38-32.

For Brothers, inspirational captain and front rower Kevin Sherriff, in just his second game back after suffering a fractured cheek bone playing for Bundaberg in the 47th Battalion Carnival on the May Day weekend, and was among their try scorers, said they “played [their] best game of footy all year at the right time of the year” to take a 26-0 half-time lead.

“We only had four incomplete sets in the first half, and we probably had a few lucky bounces, scoring a few sneaky tries from Taylar Barritt kicks, and we didn’t finish the way we wanted. They had players out, but it showed in the last 20 minutes that they can score points when Matt Craven takes control – they scored 16 points in five minutes,” Sherriff said.

Cole was man of the match, with flashy Papua New Guinean winner Benaiah Kambanei taking out their players’ player award after notching just his fifth try of the season in a robust all-round performance.

“Both were pretty outstanding and for Tim, it was his best game for a long time and it was good to see his confidence back and starting to take control,” Sherriff said.

Centre Klinton Beer grabbed another four-pointer after bagging a double in his comeback match against Wallaroos last week, and he has complemented the team nicely.

“Klint was a late signing for us – he hadn’t been playing footy this year, but he played with most of the boys back in 2018 and we were looking for a centre, so we phoned him to see what he was doing, and he was keen, and he’s been very handy for us in the last two weeks,” Sherriff said.

After winning just five of their first 11 games, and losing all three clashes with Wests, then getting the points on a Hervey Bay forfeit, before striking form with back-to-back wins, the dual premiership winning captain believes they can now defend the crown and notch their third title in four seasons following on from 2017 and 2019.

“I just think where we are sitting with the season we have had, soon we will be hitting the finals, and it’s anyone’s game – if we can get through next weekend unscathed, we are all feeling good that we are finally coming together and sticking to our structures,” Sherriff said.

For Wests, high-class centre Dyirun Johnson notched a double, also in only his third game back after being out for two months due to injury, while another feature was powerhouse under 18 forward Flynn Purkis grabbing his first A Grade try in just his second appearance in top grade.

Waves stay in fifth place, and while they are now just two points in front of Wallaroos, who snapped a six-game losing streak, they have a points differential of -39 to Roos’ -134, and will retain that position and the last berth in the finals unless they suffer a massive loss to Brothers next Saturday and Roos beat Seagulls by an improbable margin, big enough to edge out the Tigers.
