Statewide competitions ready to go for Round 2

Rolling updates about statewide competitions rugby league games scheduled for this weekend.

QRL statewide competitions Round 2 updates

Friday, March 4

Following a meeting of statewide competitions CEOs, and given there has recently been an easing of the rainfall in southeast Queensland, QRL statewide competitions manager Dave Maiden said the decision remains to proceed as scheduled with this weekend’s matches (see initial response below).

The QRL will continue to monitor conditions over the next 24 hours to ensure there are no further threats to participants wellbeing.

"Travel safely and enjoy being back at the footy this weekend," Maiden said.

Round 2 of the QRL's junior statewide competitions are expected to go ahead as planned this weekend after last weekend's deluge caused havoc with the opening round of matches.

QRL statewide competitions manager Dave Maiden said plans were in place to allow for all scheduled games to be played.

“We are working as though all scheduled games are going ahead as planned this weekend for Round 2 of the Harvey Norman Under 19 Girls, Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup and Cyril Connell Challenge," Maiden said.

“We also hope that trial matches scheduled for this weekend can also take place.

“There will be a few venue changes to accommodate the fact some grounds originally set down in the draw to host cannot be played on currently.

“We will meet again on Friday to make a final call, especially if rain falls between now and then.

“As with all decisions made, player and participant safety is paramount, so some investigations will need to take place with regards to the state of the roads to-and-from some venues, but outside of that, all systems go for footy this weekend.”

The first game of Round 2 of the statewide competitions is scheduled to kick off at 9am this Saturday with the Harvey Norman Under 19 match between two new teams in the Tweed Seagulls and Redcliffe Dolphins.

The opening Round 2 fixture in the Cyril Connell Challenge will be at 9.30am between Souths Logan Magpies and Burleigh Bears, with the home venue switched to Pizzey Park for this weekend's game.

The first match in Round 2 of the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup will also feature Tweed Seagulls and the Redcliffe Dolphins, with the game at Tugun kicking off at 11.30am.

This year, you can watch QRL statewide competition matches at QPlus.tv. This weekend, the QPlus launch offer of free access to all opening round games remains, given the false start to Round 1 last weekend.
