Burleigh Bears eye off next challenge against Redcliffe

The Burleigh Bears are back in action this weekend following a bye in the last round and are ready to come face-to-face with the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup.

The Bears are currently in ninth place on the overall ladder and with two games to go in the season, they will be looking to springboard from Round 6 and finish the season with plenty of positives.

When fans last saw Burleigh, they had a convincing 40-24 win over Wynnum Manly Seagulls, coming back from 20-12 down to dominate the Seagulls and it will be that momentum the Bears want to take into this match against the Dolphins.

The Dolphins come into this match following their Round 5 loss against Norths Devils and Bears coach Michael Witt was wary of the wounded Dolphin.

“We just have to worry about us to be honest, but I am sure they will be looking for a response to the loss to Norths,” Witt said.

“The week off probably didn’t come at a great time for us, we had a good win against Wynnum Manly and it would have been nice to keep going, but it also gives us a chance to get over some injuries.

“We have had some great performers... our fullback Karauria Stokes-Mahara and our front row Josiah Pahulu. We will need them again this round.”

In the round's other matches, there is plenty to play for across the competition.

Brisbane Tigers looked good in stages against Souths Logan Magpies last weekend and will be thinking their 32-18 loss was actually a game they should have won.

Tigers started well and looked in control, but they let the game slip away at crucial stages when calmer heads were needed.

Their opponents this week the Wynnum Manly Seagulls got the win over their feathered friends the Tweed Seagulls 22-16 and did this despite very little possession.

William Herbert was great in defence and Jeremy Trappett made a great impact in attack with 141 metres.

Last weekend, the Ipswich Jets were in fine form and were ready to fly against the Western Clydesdales when they hosted them last round.

From the first minute, when Lj Nonu scored, to the 63rd minute, when Alton Naiyep scored, it was all Jets in the 46-10 win.

In a great team performance, the Jets were ahead 18-0 at half-time and kept the pressure on in the second half.

This round will see the battle of the big winners with their Round 6 opponents Sunshine Coast Falcons posting a comprehensive 48-8 win over Wide Bay Bulls.

The Falcons made nine line breaks and 33 tackle breaks on their way to scoring eight tries.

Another pleasing aspect of their performance was the fact they only missed 12 tackles.

After a tough loss to Ipswich last weekend, the Clydesdales are back at home and will host the Wide Bay Bulls.

Down 18-0 against the Jets, Toowoomba couldn’t recover, but did score two late tries thanks to fullback Riley Wockner and Luke Cesari.

The side finished on a positive and that will be what they want to take forward to Round 6.

The Bulls also come into this game with a loss and will be aiming to put what they worked on in training this week onto the field.

Northern Pride had a tough trip to Townsville last week to face the Blackhawks and made things hard for themselves in the match.

The Pride had 42 per cent of the ball, making it difficult to stop the Blackhawks when they were full of running.

The Pride missed 35 tackles and will need to rectify that this week to get the win over their Round 6 opponents Central Queensland Capras.

Central Queensland had their own challenges last weekend against the Cutters, but William Lewis was a tackling dynamo and made 40 tackles.

Mutua Brown will be after repeat performance of 162 metres.

Tweed Seagulls lost to the Wynnum Manly variety of the bird in a close contest  last weekend that they were in the mix to win. Will Taylor made a great effort in defence with 31 tackles and Reico Ratana scored a try and made 129 metres in two of the team's standout performances.

Tweed had more ball, but just couldn’t make an impact with it, scoring three tries to Wynnum Manly's four. What Tweed did really well was comeback and stay solid in the middle when they were down 18-10 at halftime.

Their opponents this weekend Norths Devils will stride into Round 6 with plenty of confidence after defeating the Dolphins 52-8.

Three tries in the first 11 minutes meant the Dolphins were struggling to recover and Norths went from there, scoring 10 tries to two.

Bradley Hazledine can rest easy knowing he more than did his job for Mackay Cutters last round. Hazledine ran for a mammoth 227 metres and made an impact with every touch. The Capras would have got sick of the sight of fullback running the ball back and breaking the line.

The Cutters recorded close win 22-16 over the Capras last week and this week  they come up against the Townsville Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks were a dominate unstoppable force against the Pride in their win last weekend, posting 10 tries to score 58 points. Townsville have 58 per cent of the ball and with it made 15line breaks. In defence, they only missed 13 tackles.
