Statewide score wrap: Tully nab first win in three years

A three-year drought was broken in the Cairns and District Rugby League A Grade competition, as the Tully Tigers notched up their first win since 2018 on Saturday night.

The ultimate underdogs finally lifted the weight of expectation with a last-minute 31-26 Round 2 victory over Mareeba Gladiators at the Tully Showgrounds on April 2.

Scores were locked at 26-26 with just a few minutes to go, when one of the club’s battlers Phil Nona – who has stayed with Tully over the past three years – kicked the field goal to give the Tigers the lead.

Another try in the dying seconds sealed the deal for the club and skipper Colin Wilkie said the relief rippled across the grounds.

“It wasn’t until the final moment that we knew we’d won,” former Northern Pride player Wilkie said.

“There is no word for what we felt other than relief ... and not just for our players. We’re a one-team town.

“The whole town was hurting with our performances in recent times. It was a relief, but also payback for our sponsors and supporters who have stuck by us.

“Seeing the looks on their faces, it felt like much more than a normal round win.”

The last time the Tigers won was in the 2018 preliminary final.

They went on to lose the grand final and since then, have not had much luck.

They experienced a major turnover in their roster due to their 2018 success and felt the affects for seasons afterwards.

In 2019, they managed one draw and in 2020, COVD-19 meant they did not get to play. Last year they went zero for 18.

Wilkie, who left the club at the end of the 2018 season to move to Brisbane, returned in January and took on the role of operations manager at the request of Tully president, Anthony Emmi.

He then started recruiting new players – including his “Dad’s Army” of mates – and the 36-year-old soon signed up himself to help get other older players on board.

Tully targeted players who were “good people first” and Wilkie said it’s because of the likes of New Zealand trio Lonnie Papani, Peter Uesele and Manny Marshall, and Mount Isa recruit Diega Teaukura that the club will find more success this year.

“We’re trying to rebuild the club and we wanted to get the right players in,” Wilkie said.

“We got a couple of guys in from New Zealand who have been great. They’re really good, not just for their on-field performance, but because of what they’ve bought into the community.

“They’ve volunteered at the canteen and the bar … I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s about good people first, then good footballers.

“Diega Teaukura came from Mount Isa and he too has been faultless since his arrival. He’s fit into our small community and he picked up man of the match after playing 80 minutes in the front row.

“I’ve also put together a bit of a 'Dad’s Army', which is a few of my mates. It’s what we needed with our young guys.

“Then we have Phil Nona. He played in our 2018 grand final side and he was there through the good times and then has endured the last few years as well.

“He was one of the first calls I made when I got back. He dropped 15kg to get the best out of himself this year. In the past, he might drift in and out of games a bit and even found himself in reserve grade last year.

“But to see someone like him have the offseason he did and shed the extra weight, it’s really good.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the QRL North region, Bowen made its long-awaited return to senior rugby league.

Playing for the first time since 1994, Bowen went down 32-18 to Townsville Brothers in the reserve grade competition.

While they may have lost, the community showed up for their team, with close to 500 people filling the grandstands.
