Round 6 preview: Two clubs to mark coaching milestones

Round 6 of the Hostplus Cup will see six teams in the competition take a break with a bye; eight teams will be in action across the state.

Burleigh Bears, Central Queensland Capras, Norths Devils, PNG Hunters, Souths Logan Magpies and Northern Pride have the weekend off and will be back on the field for Round 7 next weekend.

Hostplus Cup Round 6 

Redcliffe Dolphins v Townsville Blackhawks

  • The Redcliffe Dolphins and Townsville Blackhawks will play in the relatively early lunch time slot this Saturday, with the match to feature in the lead-up to the NRL game between the Warriors and Canberra Raiders at Moreton Daily Stadium
  • Coming into this game off a loss to Northern Pride, the Dolphins have now lost their past three games
  • After a slow start to the season, the Blackhawks have now won their past three games
  • The Dolphins have won three of the past four games between these two sides, with their last two wins being by two points 
  • The Dolphins have also won the past four games between these two sides at Moreton Daily Stadium
  • However, the Dolphins have lost two of their past three home games
  • In contrast, the Blackhawks have lost only one of their past seven away games, with one drawn result
  • This will be the Cup 50th game as coach for Blackhawks mentor Aaron Payne; he has overseen 31 wins, one draw and 17 losses
  • This will be the 50th Cup game for Dolphins fullback Trai Fuller

Tweed Seagulls v Wynnum Manly Seagulls

  • The 'flockbuster' action returns this weekend, with Wynnum Manly Seagulls hosting Tweed Seagulls, with both sides coming into the match following Round 5 losses
  • Wynnum Manly have won the past five, and nine of the past 10, games between these two sides
  • Wynnum Manly have also won the past two and four of the past five games played between these two sides at Piggabeen, the home of the Tweed 
  • However, Wynnum Many have lost three of their past four away games
  • This will the 100th Cup games as coach for Wynnum Manly's Adam Brideson, making him the 20th person to achieve this milestone and the first for Wynnum Manly. Brideson has seen 54 wins and 45 losses during his time
  • Wynnum Manly will also be celebrating a player milestone, with Kalolo Saitaua taking part in his 50th Cup game. The skilful forward has also played Cup with Norths Devils and Souths Logan during his career
  • In team news, Tweed listed multiple changes when they submitted their team on Tuesday, including Jaline Graham in at fullback for Jayden Campbell and Blake Scott onto the interchange bench for Tanah Boyd.
  • Wynnum Manly have also made changes, with Dredin Sorensen moving in from the wing to the centres for an injured Delouise Hoeter and Tristan Hope joining the bench

Mackay Cutters v Brisbane Tigers

  • The top-of-the-ladder Brisbane Tigers have not lost in their past seven games, a tally that includes two draws
  • The Tigers have also won the past six, and nine of the past 10, games played between these two sides
  • The visitors have also won the past two and three of the past four games played against Mackay Cutters in Mackay
  • However, the Cutters have won two of their past three home games and will be looking to keep their good form intact
  • The Tigers currently have two wins and a draw from their past three away games
  • Last weekend former Springwood Tigers juniors and current Melbourne Storm young gun Alec Macdonald made his Cup debut with the Tigers

Sunshine Coast Falcons v Ipswich Jets

  • It's another big weekend of rugby league at Sunshine Coast Stadium, with the grand final of the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup being played in the lead-up to the Cup match
  • The home side the Sunshine Coast Falcons have won their past three games
  • Last weekend, Ipswich Jets came agonisingly close to upsetting the defending premiers Norths Devils, going down 36-32 in the last minute of the match. The result means the Jets have now lost their past five games
  • The Falcons have won three of the past matches against the Jets and there has also been a draw in the past four games played between these two sides
  • On top of that, the Falcons have won two and drawn one of the past four games played between these two sides at Kawana
  • Overall, the Falcons have won their past five home games
  • The Jets, however, have seven losses and two draws from their past 10 away games
  • In a big boost for the visitors, captain Nat Neale returns to the pack after serving his one-match suspension last weekend, however winger Ratu Rotavisoro will miss this Sunday's game for a careless high tackle
