Toowoomba Valleys Roosters claimed their first win of the season in the A Grade competition, rallying together after centre Jordan Drew suffered a horrific ankle injury.
Drew - who has previously been contracted to the Brisbane Broncos and played for Townsville Blackhawks and Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Hostplus Cup - had to be rushed to hospital in Sunday's clash against Oakey Bears, after he dislocated his ankle, with the foot separating from his tibia.
It was a gruesome injury which caused the game to halt for up to an hour and left his team-mates rattled.
Toowoomba Valleys president Gary de Joux said the team responded with grit on the field - and demonstrated true sportsmanship off the field.
"They were really fired up to get the result in the end," de Joux said of his club's A Grade side.
"It was a severe break and they were pretty rattled.
"But in the true spirit of the club, after the game was over, they passed a hat around after the game and a number of guys contributed cash and even their match payments for the day to help Jordan out financially.
"He runs his own business - he's a personal trainer - and he could now face a few weeks away from his employment.
"He’s a true fighter and I know he’s going to do all he can to get back on the field."
Toowoomba Valleys claimed the 40-12 victory on their home soil at John McDonald Sporting Complex, with Daniel Bain and Udom Wala scoring doubles.
Dwayne Duncan meanwhile played his first game of the season and came away as the player of the match.
The team have since all reached out to Drew and de Joux said the 27-year-old had been blown away by the response, noting how incredible the support had been.
"I really am just proud of the culture we’ve created," de Joux said.
"It makes me proud to be with a club that shows so much support for each other."
Drew will have surgery on his right ankle and took to Instagram to thank everyone for their messages.
The Roosters will now look to go back-to-back when they take on Toowoomba Brothers this Sunday.
