The table-topping Mackay Magpies may not have come away with a win in Round 7 of the Rugby League Mackay and District A Grade competition, but they still had plenty to celebrate as six former juniors took to the field together.

The six graduates - Hayden Brownsey, Hayden Pace, Reville MacPhee, Andrew Borg, Mackenzie Novosel and Cody Kynaston – played against Carltons Devils, with Novosel making his debut.

It was also MacPhee’s first home game, after playing his first A Grade game in the previous round, and coach Scott Thorburn said the presence of six former juniors not only highlighted the strength of the club’s pathways, but pointed to a promising future for the Magpies.

“I’ve coached all those boys over various stages … a couple of them boys I’ve coached since under 7s,” Thorburn said.

“Mackenzie was making his debut on the wing, while Reville was only in his second game. All the other boys have come into the side over the past 12 to 18 months.

“We’ve always been a strong club. It’s great for them, great for myself and it’s great for the juniors. It was our Super Saturday on the weekend and so we had all the juniors there to watch these boys who have come from the juniors play in the big game that night. They get to see that.

“We played against a very experienced Carltons side … they’re a hardened team, but we went really well for such a young side. If I need to use these guys moving forward, I know they’ll be up for the contest.”

Both Novosel and MacPhee play with Mackay’s under 20s side and Thorburn said it will be a boost for a lot of that age group to also see those two earn a promotion.

While they came into the team due to injuries, Thorburn said their A Grade debuts were always on the cards for this year.

“(Novosel) played in the trial games for us. He’s earned his spot there,” Thorburn said.

“We had a couple of injuries but those boys were all ready to go. Young Reville, who is still only 19, played in the centres and it was a good opportunity for him.

“They obviously become better players for it. When those boys go back to under 20s, it gives that whole under 20s team a lift. They can see their teammates go up to play first grade and that the depth is filtering through the club.”

Mackay Brothers also celebrated the elevation of a former junior, with Dawson Harch making his A grade debut against the Wests Tigers.
