Statewide score wrap: Attention turns to state finals

“We’ll probably go to one of the local clubs and watch the game live,” Forbes said.

“We’re hoping to get all 17 players in our squad, maybe some shadow players, and our coaching staff.

“We have our hoodies and hats that arrived from the Chairman’s Challenge, so we will hand out those on Saturday night too.

“We’ll have a barbecue, a bit of a laugh and a bit of a feed and see where we’re travelling in a month and what we’re up against.

“I know Rocky pulled off a couple of upsets to win the 47th Battalion, so I’m not sure if they’ve played their grand final already.

“Townsville are connected to the Blackhawks and have Matty Bowen as coach, so they will have a few tricks up their sleeve for sure.

“Having watched their games, they had similar styles, so I think it will be an exciting game with lots of tries. It’s pretty open, attacking sort of football. It will be good to see two entertaining sides coming up against each other.”

Forbes said his own preparation had continued, despite the long break between the Chairman’s Challenge and the XXXX League Championship final at the end of July.

The focus for Forbes at the moment was on keeping his squad connected and talking, with training to become a priority in two weeks.

Out of his original squad of 19, he’s only lost two players to other commitments, but Forbes and his coaching staff are watching the Gold Coast A Grade competition closely to see who would fit best into the tight-knit squad.

“All the guys have gone back to their local community clubs and are playing some really good footy,” Forbes said.

“The coaching staff is trying to get out to watch as many games as we can, watch their performances, injuries and stuff like that.

“We have our own What’s App group where we’re trying to keep the vibe alive and do interactive stuff like pick the margins in NRL or Origin games. It’s just little things like that to keep the boys chatting.

“Most of the battle is keeping the boys connected. That (camaraderie) had a lot to do with how we picked the boys.

“We talked to the coaches to see if they would fit into the DNA we wanted in the group. We need boys that come together quickly and peak together.

“We’ve got a bunch of players that have played at a high level – Tweed Seagulls, PNG Hunters, Burleigh Bears. But most importantly, we have a bunch of homegrown lads.

“That’s a big thing for me, is having that big portion of the side being homegrown, Gold Coast boys, and representing their community at the state level.”
