Round 17 - Week 2 preview: Tweed's Liolevave hits 100

Round 17 concludes this weekend, with all of the remaining teams taking to the field after the Ipswich Jets and Brisbane Tigers provided an entrée to fans last weekend. 

This week, the round will see three games on Saturday and three games on Sunday, including the feature match of the round between fierce rivals Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Redcliffe Dolphins which can be viewed live and free.

Townsville Blackhawks v Northern Pride

  • North Queensland rivalry comes to the fore again this Saturday when the Townsville Blackhawks host the Northern Pride at Jack Manski Oval
  • The last time the two sides met was in XXXX Rivalry Round in Round 4, where the Blackhawks proved too strong, recording a 22-12 win
  • While home team the Blackhawks have won the past two, and four of the past five, games played between the two sides, the Pride have won two of the past three games against the Blackhawks at Jack Manski Oval
  • The Pride also come into this match with good form, having won their past two games
  • However, the Blackhawks have won their past two home games and the Pride have lost their past five away games, but did win their last match at their "home away from home" in 'Activate! Queensland' Country Week on Thursday Island
  • Blackhawks half Shaun Nona continues to tally up the points and now requires two more to bring up 300 for the club. He needs 13 to pass Carlin Anderson (310) to become Townsville's highest ever points scorer

Souths Logan Magpies v Norths Devils

  • Norths Devils will be looking to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Marsden State High School to take on Souths Logan Magpies after losing their past two matches
  • The Magpies too are searching for a win after again falling just short in their last match of securing an elusive win, going down to Pride on Thursday Island in Round 16
  • The last time the two sides faced off in Round 4, the Devils were 34-26 winners
  • However, while the Devils have lost their past two games, the Magpies have lost their past 10 games and have also lost their past two games at Marsden
  • The Devils have lost their past two away games, but have won the past three, and six of the past seven, games between these two sides

Mackay Cutters v Central Queensland Capras

  • Home side Mackay Cutters have lost their past three matches and have a challenge ahead of them when they host the high-flying Central Queensland Capras this weekend
  • The last time the two sides met, it was the Capras who claimed a 26-18 win
  • The Capras have won their past three games and also won the last game played between these two sides, after losing the previous four matches
  • However, the Cutters have won the past four, and nine of the past 10, games between these two sides in Mackay
  • The Capras have two wins and a draw in their past three away games

Redcliffe Dolphins v Wynnum Manly Seagulls

  • One of the biggest rivalries in the competition sees Redcliffe Dolphins at home to Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the feature match of the round
  • In their last meeting in XXXX Rivalry Round in Round 4, the Seagulls overpowered the Dolphins with a 40-14 win
  • Since then however, the Dolphins have found form and have seven wins and two draws from their past nine games
  • Despite the Dolphins having the better of the head-to-head record, Wynnum Manly have won three of the past four games played between these two sides
  • However, the Dolphins have won the past three games against the Seagulls played at Redcliffe and have also got four wins and a draw in their past five home games overall 
  • Wynnum Manly lost their last away game after winning the previous three and will be aiming to get back on track on Sunday

Tweed Seagulls v Burleigh Bears

  • There is no love lost between these two bitter rivals who always put on a show when they go toe-to-toe
  • In Round 4, it was Tweed Seagulls that claimed the win over the Burleigh Bears, with Jojo Fifita scoring a double in the 32-18 win
  • Fifita has since gone on to debut with the Gold Coast Titans, and will feature in the NRL side against Melbourne Storm
  • The Bears have become the team to beat in the competition and are sitting pretty on their own at the top of the ladder
  • They have have won not only their past two games, but also five of their past six away games
  • Additionally, the Bears have won four of the past five games between these two sides at Piggabeen; however, the Seagulls have won two of the past three games between these two sides
  • In-form Bears half Josh Rogers requires four points to bring up 400 in the Hostplus Cup
  • In milestone news, this is set to be the 100th Cup game for Tweed forward Lamar Liolevave (main image), who has played all his competition games for the Seagulls

Sunshine Coast Falcons v PNG Hunters

  • Sunshine Coast Falcons will host PNG Hunters on Sunday and will be aiming to bounce back from their Round 16 loss to the Capras, while the Hunters bring winning form with them into this match
  • When the 2017 grand final opponents last met in Round 4 this year, the Falcons were too good for the Hunters, winning 22-8
  • Overall, the Falcons have won the past two, and four of the past five, games between these two sides
  • The Falcons have also won the past six games between these two sides at Kawana, with the Hunters' only win their coming in their first clash there in 2014
  • The Falcons have also won their past two, and nine of their past 10, home games
