Statewide score wrap: Clermont and Blackwater take out Central Highlands titles

At the start of this year, the Clermont Bears A Grade side was on the brink of folding. Today, they are the 2022 Central Highlands premiers.

The Bears overcame minor premiers and championship favourites Dysart Bulls 34-28 on Saturday, in what was a major effort from the young side.

Coach Justin Barrett has led the team sporadically over his career, with his last stint in charge in 2015. This was also the last time Clermont won the A Grade premiership.

Barrett returned this year when he learnt the club may not field a senior side and finished 2022 having guided the team, including his son and captain Brodee, to the trophy.

“We were about to fold at the start of the year … we had no committee and I’m a tragic with football and I don’t want to see our club die,” Barrett said.

“It is very amazing to see what we’ve done this year. It’s a very special win. We’ve got a young bunch of kids here.

“My son is the captain and halfback. I’ve coached a lot of these kids all the way through, so it makes it more special to me to see these young kids win a premiership.

“It still hasn’t sunk in, but I’m very proud, not just to win it with my son, but the vice-captain has done a lot for us and is probably about to hang the boots up.

“Allan Shannon, he’s inspirational to all these young players. He’s the old head with a bit of experience. To win one and send him out this way, it means a lot to me.”

Clermont had come up against Dysart three times in the regular season and had lost each of those meetings.

But Barrett said he worked all week to instil a belief in his young side that they could overturn those results when it mattered most.

“We believed Dysart’s fitness wasn’t there and we had to turn them around, get them to our kicks,” Barrett said.

“Dysart had a strong team and we haven’t beaten them all year.

“To get these boys up and be mentally prepared, I was pretty overwhelmed and happy with how they conducted themselves.”

Meanwhile, Blackwater Crushettes took out the women’s revived Central Highlands competition, beating Bluff Rabbitohs 38-0.

Also the minor premiers for 2022, Blackwater only lost two games on their way to this season’s title, in what was a milestone year for the women’s competition.
