Boost for community clubs with flood funding distributed

Community clubs across Queensland have been allocated more than $250,000 to help get them back up and running following the devastating floods earlier this year.

This significant financial assistance was made possible by the establishment of a relief fund, announced in March by the National Rugby League, to support the many clubs affected.

The initiative came off the back of discussions between leaders from the QRL and the Brisbane Broncos about the best way to help community clubs in Queensland rebuild.

Queensland Rugby League chief executive officer Rohan Sawyer confirmed 26 community clubs, as well as the Brisbane Rugby League Referees’ Association, had now received confirmation of financial assistance.

“Through the various pictures and news reports, we all saw how devastating the floods were for many, including community rugby league clubs across southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales,” Sawyer said.

“We were thrilled to see how quickly the funding support package came together and the collaboration between the NRL, QRL, Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans and New South Wales Rugby League.

“As it stands today, the QRL and other fund partners have approved the distribution of $255,000 to community clubs in Queensland.

“While the fund is not designed to fully compensate the loss and damage sustained by some clubs, it will go a small way to supporting them through the 2022 season and helping our many incredible volunteers prepare for next year.”

Brothers St Brendan’s in Rocklea was one of the hardest hit community clubs in Queensland.

In a boost for Brothers St Brendan’s, the QRL approved further flood support funding for the club in addition to the initial $5000 grant.

The QRL is committed to providing further support to clubs and leagues through its soon-to-be-released State Infrastructure Strategy that includes future proofing rugby league facilities.
