Carrigan joins star list in elite Queensland showcase

Patrick Carrigan’s breakthrough season at club and representative level has placed the Queensland Maroons forward in contention for the prestigious Queensland Sport Star of the Year award.

Carrigan is one of 15 elite athletes from the state’s sporting system who have been nominated for this year’s award.

While it is an exceptionally talented and diverse field with many excelling on the world stage, Carrigan is currently making his own mark on the international scene through his efforts with the Kangaroos Rugby League World Cup squad in the United Kingdom.

Carrigan produced a breakout season for the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Maroons in 2022, with his strong form across both the National Rugby League and State of Origin series paving the way for his selection in the Kangaroos squad.

Carrigan made his Origin debut in this year’s series for the Maroons after missing the majority of the 2021 season with an ACL injury.

The talented forward made an immediate impact in Game I, where he played 64 minutes straight due to injuries to teammates, running for 183 minutes.

He led from the front in Game II and was elevated to the starting team for the series decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Carrigan was resolute in his defence, again leading the tackle count with 47 tackles and amassing the most run metres of any forward with 130.

His consistency across the series saw him awarded the Wally Lewis Medal as player of the series.

In September, he was also announced as the recipient of the Ron McAuliffe Medal as the Maroons’ player of the series.

Off the field, Carrigan carried himself with distinction and was heavily involved in regular community activities, including the Maroons Fan Day in Warwick.

The 27th annual Queensland Sport Awards presentation evening will be held on November 24.

The Maroons are in the thick of the awards with Billy Slater nominated for Coach of the Year and the Origin side a nominee for the XXXX Queensland Sport team of the Year.
