Maroon pride and passion to light up Townsville

Townsville’s picturesque beachfront will turn maroon in the lead up to the historic women’s State of Origin clash at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Fresh from a gritty Game I victory over the New South Wales Sky Blues, the Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons are now preparing to head north where they will draw inspiration from the energy of supporters who will attend the team’s official fan day at The Strand on Saturday, June 17.

The groundswell of support from northern fans just five days out from the series-deciding match will provide an enormous lift for a Maroons team bracing for a fierce fightback from the Sky Blues, who need to win by nine points to lift the shield.

Queensland coach Tahnee Norris said the Maroons were looking forward to spending a full week in Townsville.

“We’re really excited about the opportunity to prepare and play in Townsville, as we know how passionate north Queensland people are about their rugby league and the Maroons,” Norris said.

“Each year, we’re seeing more and more women and girls play the game in regional communities throughout northern and central Queensland.

“Having the Maroons up there in the community for the week is a great reward for them, and I’m sure it will inspire the next generation of young Queensland talent.

“Our players and coaching staff will get a lot out of the week as well. The fan day in particular is an important part of our campaign as we’ll get an enormous lift from seeing the passion and commitment of Maroons fans close up.”

With the backing of the Townsville City Council, the Maroons will be at The Strand from 2pm on the Saturday.

There will be a range of family-friendly activities, from the team meet and greet to music and face painting.
