Statewide score wrap: Gatton takes home mid-season grand finals

Gatton Hawks have shown their strength in the top grade after claiming the Madsen Rasmussen Cup men's and President's Cup women's crowns on Saturday.

In the prestigious Madsen Rasmussen Cup, it was Gatton defeating Valleys 36-4 after racing out to a 30-0 lead in the opening half-hour, stunning the crowd at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

Gatton fullback Luke Self - who was the Bill and Steven Pollard Medallist as player of the match - scored two of his side's six first half tries, as the Hawks took advantage of a wealth of possession in the opening stanza.

Haydan Lipp was instrumental in the rout with the powerful Sione Foueti running off his hip and putting their side in a position to capitalise.

For Valleys, Hugh Sedger tackled all night, while Dwayne Duncan tried everything to motivate his team.

Early mistakes stalled their momentum and the game management that got them to the top of the ladder went missing. They had no answers to the Hawks' forwards and could not beat Gatton's stout defence in their rare opportunities with the ball.

Speaking after the win, Luke Self said there was a feeling his side was about to produce something special, and they lived up to the lofty expectations.

“It was good. The boys warmed up well, we came out of the sheds full of energy and we put it away in the first 20 or 30 minutes," he said.

“Not one bloke let us down today. Everyone turned up in defence. I couldn’t be prouder of the boys, the way we scrambled."

The fullback expected to see plenty more of Valleys this year and said next time, they would be stronger.

“I reckon we’ll play them two or three more times yet, so there's a long way to go, but we're looking forward to it. They’re a good contest every time we verse them, so it won’t be easy next time," Self said.

Gatton coach John Flint said the clash coming up on July 16 would be a cracker.

“We got no injuries out of that and I hope the Valleys boys got no injuries. We see them again at home in two weeks’ time so they’ll turn up, they’ll be ready, they’ll learn from that and it will be a bloody good game," he said.

The success avenged a loss in the Cup last year, when they also went down in the grand final.

The men's win followed an earlier success from the women's side in the President's Cup, with the Hawks defeating Oakey 14-8 in a physical, tense affair.

Gatton captain Kim Dore opened the scoring with a try just before halftime, before Caitlin Nolan crossed to take it to a 10-point lead in a try set up by Courtney Robinson and player of the match Bonnie Zappa.

Oakey's Elaina Saluni bulldozed over in the 46th minute and they were threatening another, but the Hawks withstood wave after wave of intense pressure and took their next opportunity to put the game to bed.

A try with five minutes left gave the Bears some hope, but Gatton held on to defend their title.
