Hastings Deering Colts Round 12 preview

The Tweed Seagulls and Brisbane Tigers will collide on Saturday to kick off Round 12 of Hasting Deering Colts.

This game could be the canape before the steak dinner - the preview of what to expect come finals time - with the Tigers in first place and Seagulls in third.

You just get the feeling, we might be seeing this showdown again.

This is the first time they have stared each other down since last year's finals series, when the Seagulls came away 28-24 winners and progressed to week two.

The Seagulls are coming into this game off the back of a 50-0 shutout of the Devils.

That scoreline will no doubt please Tweed and have them knowing they're on the right track, especially the clean sheet in defence.

As much as the Seagulls won’t like it being said, you can’t get more perfect than this performance - they had 66 per cent of the ball, 13 line breaks, 65 tackle breaks and just 15 missed tackles. All of this resulted in nine tries.

Ryan Foran was dynamic in the second row with 175 run metres while Jotham Russell was in everything, scoring four tries.

Tweed coach Aaron Zimmerle was more than happy with what Tweed produced and is excited about the challenge ahead.

“These are the games you look forward to, they are the games you love and remember,” Zimmerle said.

“The Tigers are a great side, well-coached, well-drilled, and have a great middle rotation.

“Their fullback (Lachlan) West is all class.

“We got beaten by the Bears and got what we deserved and we answered back with a great win over Norths.

“Now we have the Tigers and then a bye so we can leave nothing out there on Saturday.”

The Brisbane Tigers are also coming from a good place, having beaten the Pride 48-12 and were dominant in every aspect.

The competition-leading Tigers scored nine tries on the back of 59 per cent of the ball, 11 line breaks and 56 tackle breaks.

The Tigers and Tweed were nearly identical in their dominance.

For the Tigers, Casey Morgan was outstanding, with the prop making ground through the middle with 188 run metres.

Fullback Lachlan West scored one try and made two line breaks. West now leads the Colts with 12 tries from 11 games.

Brisbane's Bailey Black is a point-scoring machine with 100 points so far this season and the leading points scorer.

Tigers coach Mark Gliddon can’t wait for this weekend.

“Tweed are a well-coached team and they have players like Elliott Speed, who I have been impressed with, and Jordan Stewart-Lewis, who is an old school lock with ball-playing skills,” Gliddon said.

“I was happy with how we played against the Pride, we overcame a bit which is pleasing, it was a rushed trip and raining and we attacked well.

“Lachlan West is a great kid and he’s very important for us.”

All seven Colts matches will be played on Saturday this weekend, with another thriller set to take place from 1pm, with the second-placed Redcliffe to host the fourth-placed Burleigh Bears, giving fans two top four showdowns.

Also at 1pm, Ipswich and Central Queensland will face off at North Ipswich Reserve.

Elsewhere, the Western Clydesdales will play host to Townsville.

Eighth-placed Souths Logan will look to keep the ninth-placed Mackay Cutters at bay when they meet from 2.45pm at Logan Metro Sports Complex.

The Pride will continue their hunt for their first win of the season against the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

And Wynnum Manly will close out the round with a clash against Norths at BMD Kougari Oval from 3.15pm.

No team will have a bye this weekend, with the Hastings Deering Colts competition to enjoy a two-week break following Round 12.
