Country centre Lucy Davis: 'This is pretty unreal'

Queensland Under 17 Country centre Lucy Davis played her first rugby league game aged 12 and hasn’t looked back, loving everything about the game.

The 16-year-old, who turns 17 on Friday, said it was “pretty unreal” to be named in the Country team alongside Western Clydesdales teammates Mariah Brown, Pypah Ferguson, Chelsea Middleton and Chloe Pallister.

"I jumped up and down… it was pretty unreal," Lucy said.

“It's something that I've been working towards a lot this year… I really want to go somewhere in football so making this team, it's a step in the right direction and I'm really looking forward to the experience."

Country coach Amanda Ohl said Lucy – “one of the babies of the team” - was selected after impressing at a carnival in Bundaberg.

“She’s very quick so hopefully we can get her over for a few meat pies,” Ohl said.

The Wilsonton State School Year 11 student first played rugby league after her HPE teacher convinced her to have a run at a school gala day.

“I absolutely loved it,” Lucy said.

“That year I then later signed up for the Toowoomba Junior Brothers and I've been playing with them ever since. I just love the sport.

“I love the mateship and the friends you get from it.  The coaches are amazing and everyone you meet along the way…  there’s just so many great people and the rugby league community is just wonderful.

“I would love to be playing in the NRLW some day and playing State of Origin. That would be a dream for me. I really want to work to get there."

Lucy said she looked up to plenty of centres in the game including Jess Sergis and fellow Toowoomba product and Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons star Shenae Ciesiolka.

“There's a lot of great centres in the game," Lucy said.

"Jess Sergis, she’s someone that I really look up to... and Shenae Ciesiolka, I’ve dealt with her through the Clydesdales… she's someone that has a lot of knowledge and being able to work with her sometimes is great.

“She's just come along to trainings and she's explained how hard it is to get there, but once you're there, it's a great experience and, she just has some tips and tricks that she gives us girls and yeah, it's really good.”

Lucy, who played in the under 17 girls competition in Toowoomba this year, said  she could not wait to rip in against City at Logan Metro Sports Complex on Saturday.

“My goal is just to go out there and apply all the skills that we're learning in this camp and really have a good game,” Lucy said.

“Just work together as a team and just really enjoy the experience and the opportunity that I've been given.”
