State of Origin is a breeding ground for storylines that transcend the ordinary.
Alfie Langer being called into the team at the eleventh hour back in 2001, Gorden Tallis rag-dolling Brett Hodgson across the sideline, Ben Hunt taking an intercept to score a match-winning try in the 78th minute.
It’s the courage and guile of Ali Brigginshaw and the silky skills of Tamika Upton.
But being a Maroon is bigger than any one moment or individual.
In 2023, we saw Billy Slater’s team be driven by a single word, Ubuntu. Loosely translated, it means 'I am, because we are'. I can’t think of a more fitting phrase to describe what it means to be a Maroon.
It’s the spirit of Queenslanders that gets us through each game, the strength and determination to carry on when it feels like we’ve got nothing left to give. Whether that’s on the football field, or in the cane fields in far north Queensland, there’s something to be said about a Queenslander’s ability to just get the job done.
When our State of Origin teams take the field in 2024, rest assured they are doing it for Queensland and Queenslanders.
