Former Intrust Super chief executive Brendan O’Farrell has today joined the board of the Queensland Rugby League (QRL).

O’Farrell assumes the role of Statewide Competitions director following Darryl Van de Velde’s decision to step down.

QRL chairman Bruce Hatcher welcomed O’Farrell’s appointment at today’s Annual General Meeting.

“Brendan has been an exceptional leader in the financial services industry over many years,” Hatcher said.

“He’s passionate about rugby league and he understands the important role our community clubs and statewide competitions play in producing elite level players, coaches, match officials and administrators.

“These qualities will be a tremendous asset for the QRL in the years to come.”

Hatcher also acknowledged Van de Velde’s service to the game in Queensland.

“Darryl has dedicated his life to rugby league and the people and communities within the game,” Hatcher said.

“As a player, he made his mark at some of the biggest clubs in Brisbane on his way to earning a Queensland representative jersey.

“He coached in England with both Castleford and Warrington, and worked as the CEO of the South Queensland Crushers.

“Add in his service to both the QRL and the Family of League, and you’re talking about someone who has made a significant contribution to the game over many years.”
