Queensland Sapphires squad announced for national championships

Queensland Rugby League has today released the Queensland Sapphires squad for the 2024 Harvey Norman Women's National Championships at the Gold Coast.

This year’s squad has been selected from players that have impressed pathways selectors, as well as BMD Premiership club coaches.

BMD Premiership newcomers the Western Clydesdales and Sunshine Coast Falcons are well represented with a combined total of eight players in the squad.

Many of these players have come through local club competitions within the catchment areas of the Clydesdales and Falcons, and now they have the opportunity to continue their development within the QRL statewide competitions pathway.

With the national championships hosted and co-ordinated by the NRL as development and talent identification opportunity, Sapphires squad members can catch the eye of NRLW clubs with strong performances.

The Sapphires squad features several recent newcomers to the code, with players ranging in age from 19 to 25.

Players cannot have played more than two NRLW games previously and they cannot hold a current NRLW contract or development player contract.

QRL has previously entered two teams - the Queensland Rubys and Queensland Sapphires - as part of its process to select the Queensland Under 19 team, but this year the Sapphires will be the QRL’s sole representative team due to the change of scheduling.

The Harvey Norman Women's National Championships will be played at UAA Park at Burleigh from March 21-24.

Maia Tua-Davidson has been appointed Sapphires head coach and she will be assisted by Rebecca Petersen.
