BMD Premiership Round 4 preview

Mackay Cutters coach Marco Peters believes his team still hasn’t fully clicked yet, despite being the only side left undefeated in this year’s BMD Premiership.

The Cutters currently hold the outright lead on the BMD Premiership table, starting season 2024 with three wins from three matches as they head into Round 4.

They’ve taken down Tweed, Sunshine Coast and Central Queensland so far and this weekend will turn their attention to the Souths Logan Magpies.

For Peters, he is proud of their efforts so far but also knows they’re still yet to truly hit their best form.

“We haven’t clicked fully yet,” he said.

“What’s worked really well so far is there’s a real team environment with the group, even though we’re spread across multiple locations.

“They’ve really bought in this year and you can feel that and they want to work hard for each other.

“You see that in the results with the Sunny Coast with a hiccup with the travel – all the coaching staff and the 18th player didn’t arrive until game time. We were on separate flights and got stuck on the tarmac in Mackay.

“The preparation, the girls did all that themselves. I had a mate who was coming to watch the game and he came and helped out… Rossy Aldridge. He went from under 7s Kawana Dolphins to BMD very quick.

“But, despite the hiccup and a slow start, the girls hung tough, specifically around defending on their line.

“Against the Sunny Coast, that was really evident. There were a lot of players working hard for each other.”

Peters said he also saw this against the Capras, with the Cutters dealt a few injury blows in the lead up to the game but his team still managed to come through to get the win.

It’s put the Cutters in a very strong position, with the competition already a third of the way done.

But now Peters wants to see his side turn up the heat.

The Cutters last year made it through to the semi-finals, getting knocked out of the premiership race by the Burleigh Bears. The Magpies did the same, but also failed to make the grand final after an upset loss to the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Now when the two semi-finalists face off against each this Sunday at Logan Metro Sports Complex, Peters wants to keep that winning run intact and knows exactly what he wants from his players.

“It’s about getting that full game performance,” he said.

“It’s just that completion and getting through that first 15 minutes of each half. We got it right against Tweed, but we definitely need to improve our starts.

“Our second half efforts have been fantastic, we just need to get that start right. Having a settled spine will help that and having a few more weeks will galvanise that as well.”

Their opponent this week have had a rocky start to season 2024.

After going through last year’s regular season undefeated, Souths Logan this year are yet to find a win.

But Peters knows they’re building towards something.

“The whole comp is this way – every week there are threats across the board,” he said.

“Souths are a sleeping giant. We don’t want to wake them this week.

“They have a hell of a forward pack and very talented halves. We want to match that. They’ve got weapons so we’re not taking them lightly at all.”

In the Saturday action in Round 4, the Brisbane Tigers – who enjoyed their first win of the season in Round 3 – will take on the second-placed Western Clydesdales to open the weekend.

At the same time at BMD Kougari Oval, Wynnum Manly will play host to Norths Devils.

And in the last Saturday game, the Sunshine Coast Falcons will come up against a red-hot Tweed outfit at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

In the final game of the round – to be played on Sunday – the Central Queensland Capras will look for their first win of the season when they take on the reigning premiers in the Burleigh Bears.
