Round 4 Sunday wrap: Cutters remain undefeated

The Mackay Cutters have extended their undefeated run in the BMD Premiership, overcoming a second half comeback from the Souths Logan Magpies to go four from four.

In hot and humid conditions at Logan Metro Sports Complex on Sunday - with the field wet and muddy from overnight rain - the Cutters claimed a 26-16 victory over the home team.

They are the only team in the competition to remain undefeated, while the Magpies are the only team yet to notch up a win after the Central Queensland Capras claimed their first two points of the year in their Round 4 clash with the Burleigh Bears, also on Sunday.

The Cutters went into halftime up 22-6, with the Magpies scoring a double to threaten in the second stanza.

But - despite signs of fatigue creeping through - the Cutters showed enough class and grit to hold on, with captain Emma Manzelmann proud of her team's efforts.

"It ended up being a sunny, hot day and the heat put the pressure on us," Manzelmann said.

"We should be used to it up north but it’s sort of a different heat down here. It was very sloppy but we came away with the win.

"(Our start) was definitely better than the last game we played. It’s that ball control we really need to work on – treat the ball like it’s gold and not drop it.

"The girls dug deep. You could see from the sideline the girls were starting to go downhill, the fatigue was starting to get them... that interchange and the girls coming off the bench, bringing that lift and getting us through.

"Your legs feel so heavy, your boots feel so heavy… it feels like you’re running on the spot, like you’re not going anywhere.

"I'm very proud. We all came together and worked really well."

The Cutters will look to continue their winning run when they take on the Western Clydesdales in Toowoomba while the Magpies will go to the Sunshine Coast to take on the Falcons.

In the other Sunday match, the Capras claimed their first win with an upset 26-12 victory over the Burleigh Bears on home turf.

Tamika Upton bagged a double in the win, which has seen them move into eighth place on the ladder.
