Round in review: Junior statewide competitions

The grand finalists have been locked in for the 2024 Harvey Norman Under 19 and Cyril Connell Cup premiership deciders.

Semi-finals were played across both competitions over the weekend, while Mal Meninga Cup went into Round 8.

Here is a wrap of the weekend that was.

Harvey Norman Under 19

The Brisbane Tigers and Mackay Cutters have progressed to their first ever Harvey Norman Under 19 grand final, after triumphing in their respective semi-finals.

While both played on Saturday, the Cutters advanced first with a tight 18-10 victory over the Western Clydesdales.

After going into halftime up 8-6, the Cutters never lost their lead but certainly endured nervous periods of the game as the two teams went back and forth.

They were up 12-10 when centre Jennifer Kimber scored the try to seal the deal with just eight minutes left on the clock.

The Tigers meanwhile had a much different path to next week's grand final with an explosive second half against the Tweed Seagulls leading to a 40-12 scoreline.

Finding plenty of success through the middle, the Tigers had their eyes on the prize, piling on five tries in the second stanza, including a hat-trick to centre Relna Hosea.

The two teams will meet in Saturday's historic grand final at Totally Workwear Stadium, with a 3.40pm kick-off.

Cyril Connell Cup

The return of the Cyril Connell Cup grand final will see the Redcliffe Dolphins take on the Townsville Blackhawks in a blockbuster showdown on Saturday from 2.10pm at Totally Workwear Stadium.

The Blackhawks were the first to go through to the premiership decider, with a 26-18 victory over the Western Clydesdales.

Townsville were always in control against their Toowoomba-based counterparts, coming out of the gates firing with a try to Dylan Gourley in the fourth minute.

An arm wrestle ensued - with the Blackhawks up 14-6 at halftime - but they had done enough to always maintain a lead.

On Sunday, the Redcliffe Dolphins overcame the Souths Logan Magpies in a nail-biting 24-18 showdown at Logan Metro Sports Complex.

In similar circumstances to the Blackhawks, the Dolphins got on the board first through five-eighth Carter Welfare and while the Magpies kept coming, Redcliffe were able to do enough to keep them at bay in wet and muddy conditions.

The same clubs made last year's Mal Meninga Cup grand final - also played at Totally Workwear Stadium - and will continue the rivalry this Saturday into the Cyril Connell Cup.

Mal Meninga Cup

The reigning premiers made quite the statement in Round 8 of the Mal Meninga Cup, as the Redcliffe Dolphins leapfrogged the Ipswich Jets to move into second place on the ladder.

With a stunning 44-12 victory, the Dolphins flexed their muscle as the competition moved into the final weeks of the regular season.

The Jets only slipped one place into third but it was an eye-opening result in the first instance of teams going beyond their three pools.

The Northern Pride also made a big jump in Round 8, going from ninth into the top six with a 32-6 win over the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

The Blackhawks fell out of the six as a consequence, following a 36-20 loss to the Souths Logan Magpies.

Tweed meanwhile remain in top spot and continue undefeated after downing the Wide Bay Bulls 76-10.
