The Mackay Cutters stamped their authority as genuine Mal Meninga Cup contenders, as they returned from a bye week with a strong win over the Western Clydesdales.

Round 9 of the Mal Meninga Cup saw several teams across the competition make a statement, with just two weeks now remaining before finals.

The Cutters were one of those sides who showed their promise for finals, after they missed the first week outside of the pool system with a bye in Round 8.

Sitting in fourth on the competition ladder, Mackay's first showdown outside of Pool A came against the Clydesdales and they put their opponents to the sword with a 34-16 victory at Toowoomba Sports Ground.

Fullback Mutua Brown bagged a double in the vital win.

The Ipswich Jets are another who came to make a statement following last week's loss to the Redcliffe Dolphins.

They bounced back strongly with a 32-10 win over the Burleigh Bears and were able to retain third place on the ladder ahead of next week's meeting with the Tweed Seagulls, who enjoyed a bye in Round 9.

The biggest mover and shaker in Round 9 however were the Wynnum Manly Seagulls who moved up four places into the crucial top six.

The Seagulls - with doubles to prop Beni Allen and winger Charlie Johnstone -  travelled north to claim a 44-6 victory over the Townsville Blackhawks at Jack Manski Oval.

The top six at the end of Round 9 sees Tweed Seagulls sitting strongly in first place, with Redcliffe Dolphins, Ipswich Jets, Mackay Cutters, Burleigh Bears and Wynnum Manly Seagulls following suit.

Sunshine Coast Falcons (seventh), Northern Pride (eighth), Townsville Blackhawks (ninth) and Western Clydesdales (10th) all remain strongly within striking distance of the top six.
