Round 8 Sunday wrap: Wynnum Manly, Pride and Hunters pile on the points

It was a high-scoring Sunday to wrap up Round 8 of the Hostplus Cup, as Wynnum Manly Seagulls, Northern Pride and PNG Hunters ran riot.

Wynnum Manly were the first to record a massive win on Sunday afternoon, overcoming their flockbuster opponents, the Tweed Seagulls, 40-16 at a muddy Piggabeen Sports Complex.

Over in Ipswich, the Northern Pride then racked up the biggest win of the weekend with a 56-12 scoreline against the Jets.

And - to close out Respect Round - the PNG Hunters returned to the winner's circle with a convincing 52-16 triumph over the Townsville Blackhawks at Jack Manski Oval.

The Pride's win saw them move from fourth into top spot on the Hostplus Cup ladder while Wynnum Manly skyrocketed from sixth spot into third.

The Hunters meanwhile moved up two spots into 10th.

For Wynnum Manly, it's been a rocky start to the season, with three byes leading to a stop-start rhythm, but skipper Bryce Donovan is hopeful today's win will put them in good stead as they move into a 10-game run.

"We've been talking consistency for 80 minutes all year now," he said.

"We've had a stop-start run so far but it was good to put pretty much a complete performance together.

"We've got all our byes out of the way and have a good 10-week stretch ahead. We wanted to start out on the right foot and I think we went pretty well today.

"It was the little effort areas that don't turn up on the stats sheet... that was on show today for most of the game, especially defending our own line for a fair bit in the first half.

"We showed some resilience there, which was good."

Winger Jonathon Reuben was a standout for Wynnum Manly, posting a stunning four-try haul in trying conditions, with the field heavily impacted by earlier rain.

For the Pride, young fullback Lachlan West bagged a hat-trick while backrower Dane Aukafolau earned a double.

For the Hunters, centre Alex Max crossed three times.
