Everything you need to know: XXXX 47th Battalion

Teams from across the vast QRL Central region will descend on Kingaroy this weekend for the 2024 XXXX 47th Battalion carnival in men's and women's competitions.

Queensland Outback - including players from Mount Isa to St George - will join the eight-team men's and seven-team women's competition for the first time, joining the regular combatants from Rockhampton to Toowoomba.

Sunshine Coast Falcons will look to reclaim the title in the women's competition, while Toowoomba Clydesdales will look to go back-to-back in the men's competition.

It will be a gruelling two days, with each team to play four 50-minute matches in a knockout-style format where first-round winners will compete for a place in the all-important Trophy Final on Sunday.

Colin Speed, coach of the defending men’s champions Toowoomba Clydesdales, expected to see a new level of competition with players having had more time to find form in their local competitions prior to the carnival, which previously fell in May.

Add the incentive of potential Queensland Country selection and players are buzzing and more committed than ever, which will give the selectors and coach Speed some headaches.

But first of all he’s hoping everyone embraces the carnival atmosphere and enjoys the wide spread of talent and different style of ad-lib footy coming to Kingaroy.

“I love the footy that gets played. It’s a different version of the game with 25-minute halves and unlimited interchange, but it’s a tough gig because you’ve got to be mindful of your selection and have players who can play multiple positions, so that’s a key factor,” Speed said.

“The other thing is all the people who come from anywhere and everywhere are good quality country people.”

And the quality of person will be one of the things Speed will look for when he swaps his Toowoomba hat for his Queensland County hat following the XXXX 47th Battalion.

“One thing is you’re looking at the quality of the person, in regards to their attitude and what sort of a team player they are, and the other thing is if they have the potential to go further,” he said.

“While there will be a lot of players in the mix on the weekend, you want players who are nearly at that next level to compete with those (southeast) sides.”

The XXXX Queensland City v Country will be played on Hostplus Cup grand final day in September.

All matches taking place on Field 1 (see schedule below) will be available to view on Qplus.tv.
