Boyd bolsters Queensland Under 19 team

Darius Boyd has been appointed head coach of the Queensland Under 19 men’s team for 2025, bringing a wealth of experience from his illustrious playing career and a growing reputation as a coach.

Boyd’s focus remains on developing the future talents of Queensland Rugby League and ensuring they understand the significance of donning the maroon jersey.

“It’s a challenge these boys will need to rise to. I want to set the expectations high and make sure they understand what it means to play for Queensland,” Boyd said.

They’ll know the history, the people, the culture, family, and friends… It’s about respecting the maroon jersey every time you step onto the field. That respect will allow them to thrive and grow.

Darius Boyd - FOG#166, who played 28 State of Origin games for Queensland during the Maroons’ golden era, served as the assistant coach for the under 19 team in 2024 and was also the Brisbane Broncos’ backs coach last season. His appointment signals a new era in developing the state’s future rugby league stars.

A premiership winner with the Broncos in 2006, Boyd secured a second title in 2010 with the Dragons, earning the Clive Churchill Medal for his outstanding performance. Despite facing pressures throughout his career, he consistently delivered on the biggest stage.

Now, Boyd is set to impart his knowledge to the next generation, focusing on building a strong culture, developing the physical and mental attributes required for elite rugby league, and guiding players on their journey to the NRL.

“For many of these boys, this will be the biggest game of their careers so far,” Boyd said.

“Defence wins these big games. We’ll work on the basics, ball control, line speed…all the little things.”

Joining Boyd’s coaching staff is former Maroons hooker Andrew McCullough (FOG #194), who played four Origin games for Queensland. McCullough will oversee the development of the forward pack, sharing his expertise in defensive structure and game management in the middle.

Rounding out the coaching team is Jesse Maclean, a proven mentor with significant experience in representative pathways, including coaching the under 17 City team and progressing through the under 19 Origin coaching system.

“It’s a great opportunity for all three of us—Andrew, Jesse, and myself—to develop the emerging Queensland players,” Boyd said.

“Imparting that knowledge is crucial in developing the next generation.”

Boyd takes over from Ben Te’o, who has joined the Brisbane Broncos coaching team this year.

The 2025 Under 19 State of Origin match against New South Wales will be played at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Thursday, June 19.
