Maia Tua-Davidson has been appointed as the head coach for the Harvey Norman Queensland Under 19 team, bringing a wealth of experience and a strong vision for the future of women’s rugby league.

Her coaching journey has been one of perseverance and dedication, making her a perfect fit to lead the next generation of Queensland talent.

Queensland’s newest coach is particularly excited about coaching alongside assistants Mitch Sargent and Matt Sanders.

“What’s most exciting about this group of coaches is we’re all on the same page in terms of value and vision, but the skillsets that we have are very complimentary,” Tua-Davidson said.

A key advantage of the coaching staff is the widespread representation they bring to the table.

“We’ve got good representation, which is a real asset,” Maia Tua-Davidson said.

“From all over the state and country, it is great to have eyes in different places which is helpful for us to always be watching Queensland players and the opposition as well.”

A firm believer in hard work and dedication, Tua-Davidson is clear about the message she wants to impart on her players.

“My messaging that I hope to teach is: ‘this is earned, not given.’ My coaching history and coming into this role reflect that. I did BMD Premiership for a couple of years, was assistant coach and head coach at nationals then working the last couple of years with under 19s. There’s been no shortcuts for me.

There are no shortcuts to earn a Queensland jersey. It’s not something you just get. I’m making sure the girls wear that jersey with enormous pride.

“These are kids, we don’t expect them to be absolute professionals, but we do expect them to be grateful for the opportunity.”

Tua-Davidson is passionate about instilling pride in the Queensland jersey, recognising the rapid evolution of women’s rugby league and the significance of representing the state.

“I think without being too cliché, it’s about the pride in the Queensland jersey,” she said.

“The evolution in women’s rugby league has been so quick, achievements for some have been easy and we want them to understand how significant this is. It might be their only time they get to represent this state.”

With a clear vision for the playing style of the team, focusing on mobility, pace, and creativity, Tua-Davidson looks forward to the future.

“We’re looking to harness an increased mobility and pace of the game,” she said.

“I love creative footy; I love watching the girls enjoy what they’re doing and express themselves. We get 60 minutes, let’s make it 60 minutes of magic.”

The 2025 Under 19 match against New South Wales will be played at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Thursday, June 19.
