Junior statewide competitions to showcase best of the best

Queensland’s leading male and female junior players are primed to perform in Round 1 fixtures across four competitions this weekend.

Fans received a small taste of what is to come this year when the Burleigh Bears played the Ipswich Jets in Mal Meninga Cup (presented by Ford) and Harvey Norman Under 19 matches last weekend.

All other Round 1 fixtures across both competitions will be played tomorrow.

The Cyril Connell Cup (presented by Ford) and Harvey Norman Under 17s are also set to explode tomorrow.

In total, there will be 26 fixtures played across the four competitions, with host venues spanning from Tugun on the Gold Coast to Mackay in North Queensland.

QRL competitions manager Dave Maiden confirmed Yeppoon’s Webb Park would now host four games between the Townsville Blackhawks and Central Queensland Capras following the weather event in Townsville.

“Like everyone else, I’m looking forward to seeing all of our clubs in action this weekend,” Maiden said.

Coaches and their support staff have put in an extraordinary amount of work with their playing squads to ensure they’re at the level required for the intensity of the opening rounds.

“I’m sure fans will be treated to some great footy tomorrow as well as the weeks ahead.”

In the Mal Meninga Cup, 2024 premiers Tweed Seagulls will begin their title defence against the Redcliffe Dolphins at Tugun.

The Dolphins will also play Tweed in the Cyril Connell Cup, with the Peninsula club looking to kick start another premiership bid in style following their grand final win last year.

The regional rivalries shape as one of the key talking points in the Harvey Norman Under 19s and 17s.

Round 1 match ups include the Mackay Cutters in action against the Northern Pride, the Sunshine Coast Falcons at home to the Western Clydesdales, and the Capras going head to head with the Blackhawks.
